On my first listen "The Shcmuel Song" sounded out of place in that score, but it has grown on me. To me it is the one time in the show that J and C are on the same plane. And the message is beautiful, if simplistic, and has a traditionally Jewish storytelling style.
I say this only having heard the OCR and not ever having seen the show.
and I suppose we've completely forgotten about "The Next Ten Minutes"? :) If there's *any* point in the show where they're existing on the same plane, it'd be when he's proposing to her, oui?

I cannot believe that someone on this thread referred to "Climb Every Mountain" from Sound of Music as a "dud!" That is a beautiful song! It may not be as exciting to watch as "Do, Re, Mi" staging wise...but it is not meant to be. I love that song and each time I watch the movie (it has to be more than 100 times by now) I find new meaning in it.
I agree with Starlight. Granted, I don't wet up every time I hear that song, but it's the heart of the piece. All R&H shows have those big anthems that are indispensable:
OKLAHOMA - "Oklahoma"
CAROUSEL -- "You'll Never Walk Alone"
KING AND ME -- "Something Wonderful"
SOUTH PACIFIC -- "Bali Ha'i"
etc.
Not duds. Perhaps overly familiar, but definitely not duds.

Five Zeros...Proceeded By A two....or is it Hello Mr. Broadway??
from On The Twentieth Century....yucchy:)))
Ok, at first site I HATED Little Lamb, but then I looked at it more, it lets you in on what Louise is feeling. Remember that she leaves before all the excitement with Mr. Goldstone, she is not onstage long enough to let her show us how she is feeling. Now I rather like the number, def. not my favorite but yea, it's good.
"Little Cat Little Cat, Why do you look so blue, did somebody paint you like that? Or is it your birthday too?"

I think that rlbgbc is totally correct about Little Lamb, and I think it is dangerous to ignore it. That song is the first time you get to know Louise's needs, and that is going to become very important as the show progresses. I also find it is the saddest song in the show, after the riotous Mr. Goldstone, it is really quiet, poinant and very sad.
I'd Like To Thank You Herbert Hoover is important to Annie, as it reminds us, what was going on in the Thirties, from the point of view of the everyday person. I actually think that it is not sacharine at all and it makes the entire musical less sweet and is certainly missing from both movies.
