I hate making these kinds of posts, but I need some help. I have a good friend moving to Australia in a few weeks, and I’m trying to make her a mix CD of Broadway songs before she goes. I’m trying to make them encouraging “we love you!”/”you can do it!” sorts of songs rather than sad “goodbye” songs, and I think I’ve gone through almost all of my applicable cast recordings (because as much as I love them, I don’t think songs like “Lot’s Wife” or “You Don’t Know This Man” will work for this). If anyone has any additions that they can think of, I would be very, very thankful.

This is what I have so far:
“I Still Call Australia Home” from The Boy From Oz
“Never Never Land” from Piece
“Purpose” from Avenue Q
“I Will Never Leave You” from Side Show
“Anytime” from Elegies/Infinite Joy: The Songs of William Finn (Norm Lewis version) (I realize the context of this song, but it’s a good song for her.)
“Follow Your Heart” from Urinetown
“Defying Gravity” from Wicked (so much of this song is just perfect for her, oddly)
“I’m the Bravest Individual” from Sweet Charity
“Seasons of Love” from Rent (she adores this song)
“Not for the Life of Me” from Thoroughly Modern Mille
“I’m Not Afraid of Anything” from Songs for a New World
“No One is Alone” from Into the Woods

Possibles:
“I’ll Be Here” from The Wild Party (Lippa)
One (or both) of the following from Songs for a New World: “Opening: A New World” (my only problem is that because it leads into “On the Deck…”, it ends suddenly), “Hear My Song”
“Set Those Sails” from In Trousers/Infinite Joy (Mary Testa)

Again, THANK YOU for any suggestions you can provide!! Updated On: 1/28/05 at 07:41 PM

I would reccommend
Home from Beauty and the Beast
I'd Give My Life for You from Miss Saigon
Love changes everything from Aspects of Love [Michael Ball style]
Without you from My Fair Lady [Julie Andrews]
and One Song Glory from Rent
maybe Fortune Favors the Brave from Aida

And I think it's really cute that you are doing this... and maybe my suggestions don't really fit, but I tried.

NIL MAGNUM NISI BONUM "No greatness without goodness."

RENThead, enLIGHist, Ozalot, Grobanite, Ringer, Pickwick LW, Wicked, Lost, American Dreams, West Wing

Seeing Australia is merely a phone call away, why not put down some "phone" songs? Like CALL ME, I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU, etc. Not show specific but a comforting sentiment nonetheless.

I second "Fortune Favors the Brave"
Maybe:
"I Know Where I Been"- Hairspray
"Astonishing"- Little Women (if you happen to have a copy)
"A New Life"- Jekyll and Hyde
"Not While I'm Around"- Sweeney Todd
"You Are My Home"- Scarlet Pimpernel
"Reviewing the Situation (reprise)" (I love the one by Jonathon Pryce, it would be perfect for this instance. Pm me if you need it)

not Broadway:
"The Prayer"- Josh Groban and Charlotte Church

Thank you all for your help!! I went and did a lot of Googling, and some of these songs are absolutely PERFECT, so thank you SO MUCH for suggesting them re: Song suggestions for a CD?

wildcat, your idea has me going through my music trying to find regular songs on that theme, so thank you for the wonderful idea!

(I know I sound like a gushy dork, but I think this is going to be a really nice CD for her.)

I know alreayd two Rent songs were suggested, but I would add "Finale B" From Rent. It talks about how you have to live each moment as your last AND about missing someone.

I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!

How about "Together Wherever We Go" from Gypsy and "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" from Cabaret.

Pass it on - Take a kid to a show.
