Tenor: I would Take Either Billy Porter or Darius. I still think Billy is the best and cant be touched.
Baritone: Norbert is Perfect casting in this role! Just Brilliant!!

If jason could just write shows with more black people. come on! Ty's singing was the best part to that cd.

I'll throw in JLT for the younger woman. I think her Christmas Lullaby would be especially good.
Norbert and JRB is one of those perfect combinations of Singer and Composer.

bjivie2-
So that comment that I made about Audra as the older woman came out wrong... I wasn't trying to call her an older woman (she's not), just saying that she'd be great in the role that is traditionally played as the older of the two women - "Stars and the Moon", "Just One Step", etc.
chester gregory would rip the tenor part to shreds.

Hrm. I guess I'm curious as to why AUDRA in that role? Yes, she sings a great Stars and the Moon, but she's not nearly old enough to have enough life experience for it to really resonate. Same thing with "Flagmaker" and "Just One Step." Flagmaker is about her son off at war, and no one's going to believe a 30-something is going to committ suicide because they can't have a fur coat. There's got to be years of neglect in order for something like that to happen.
I would think she would be better for the younger woman.
Even JRB mentioned that it was a financial failure, and he was extremely lucky it got recorded. Why would a producer take a chance on this show again, from a financial point of view?
Hey, Audra's a pretty damn good actress. I'd like to see her interpretation of these songs even IF she may be younger than other actresses... I think she could bring an interesting angle to the "straightforward" songs.
BTW, how old was Jessica Molaskey when she did the show, anyway? She can't be more than in her 40's now.
Oh, and ChEMD - I personally see it more as an Actor's Fund concert or an Encores revival...
Why would producers take a chance on the show again? Because JRB is much more well known in theatrical circles now than he was then and because Songs For a New World has attained an extremely high level of popularity in recent years. I, personally, would not want a revival just for that reason: every college in the world is doing it, and it's getting a little old.
Though if Darius deHaas played the tenor...I love me some Darius deHaas
Emily Skinner (Jessica Molaskey track)
Julia Murney (Andrea Burns track)
Michael Arden (Brooks Ashmankas track)
Norm Lewis (Billy Porter track)
while the artists mentioned are amazing, i sense their voices would have a hard time making the show what it is.
this isn't a show that's supposed to bring down the house at every number. there were SO many flaws in the original cast and that's why it's so beautiful. it was completely unedited and put out there as Jason Robert Brown's life splayed before us.
i'm not saying that any of those choices are bad. i just think maybe they seem like we would be expecting too much out of the show....
i think Emily Skinner would be a good choice, though. very understated yet beautifully put.
While I love Norm Lewis, would he be able to sing that part? He has such a rich, baritone sound, and even if he could hit all the notes I feel like it wouldn't fit in as you'd really need a soaring tenor sound.

I thought the same thing, gumbo, but, then again, I'd love to listen to Norm try it.
I was listening to the OCR last night and realized that Victoria Clark would be amazing as the older woman.
Think about it.
