Songs That You Used to Hate But Now You Like

What are some songs that you used to not care for, or never gave the chance to listen to, and now you like them after giving it a few more listens?

"If I Can't Love Her" - Beauty and the Beast
"Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" - Hairspray
"Find Your Grail" - Spamalot

"We like to snark around here. Sometimes we actually talk about theater...but we try not to let that get in our way." - dramamama611

The Schmuel Song from The Last 5 Years
Over the Moon from RENT
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife

How Do You Choose from Dracula
What Was A Woman to Do from DRS (Don't hate me! I really didn't enjoy it at first, I dunno)
The Scarlet Pimpernel from The Scarlet Pimpernel (but only in moderation)

on the other end of the spectrum,
I used to LOVE Gethsemene (JCS), Memory (CATS) and all of Wicked and now if I hear them one more time I just might hurl. Okay, there are actually a lot more in this category... hmm...

All of Mimi's songs from Rent had to grow on me, I don't know why but I Daphne used to be my least favorite member of the OBC, but now I love Without You.

Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat-Guys and Dolls

I bought the Broadway Treasures II DVD and watched the Guys and Dolls performance, which got me to play it non-stop for a while.

"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."

"Wick" from The Secret Garden

Our HS did a production of this, and my friends who were in the pit sang it so much that it drove me insane and I hated the song after that. But I recently rediscovered the cast album and now I really like this song. It's good in small doses, I guess.

The night that Goldman Spoke and He Wanted to Say from Ragtime. I hated them at first, but, now, they are my favorite songs in the whole show...And "What a Game". Didn't like that one either, but now, I love it.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

If I can't love her-beauty and beast.

when I listened to the cast recording, I didn't like the song at all. I only began to love it after listening to James Barbour's singing. 1000 times better than Terrence Mann.

All of The Light in the Piazza. I just couldn't stand the lack of melodies originally and now I'm beginning to like it.

And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going...the first time I heard it on my ultimate broadway CD I just thought it was someone screaming, but now of course I love it and Jennifer Holliday.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Everything from BKLYN
I'll Cover You from Rent (I just didnt feel like ever listening to it)
Find Your Grail from Spamalot
Fine, Fine, Line from Avenue Q (It was slow..it bored me, but now I 100% love it!)
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

Everything from Little Women...everything that I thought was painfully lame (and still do...) has now grown on me and I love it! Too bad it's closed now.

"The 4 March sisters! Together!! Forever!!!"
"I look before I leap I love margins and discipline I make lists in my sleep Baby what's my sin?"- Joanne, Rent

re: Songs That You Used to Hate But Now You Like

At first i hated everything Marissa Jaret Winokur sang in 'Hairspray', just because her voice drove me crazy. But she and the music grew on me over the weeks, and now 'Hairspray' is one of my favorite, just-for-fun musicals.

And i concur with the Sondheim statement. That took some adjusting, but now I have found my master to emulate and look up to in writing.

Most of Light in the Piazza.

Because I was stubborn and didn't really give it the time to warm up to me.
Me, I like to live.
Me, I like to laugh.
Me, I like to love.
