I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...
"Every day has the potential to be the greatest day of your life." - Lin-Manuel Miranda
"And when Idina Menzel is singing, I'm always slightly worried that her teeth are going to jump out of her mouth and chase me." - Schmerg_the_Impaler
I would say "Fallen Angel" from Jersey Boys. It's such a wonderful song that makes me feel I'm going to cry and when I see it, I cry, it's just so beautiful.
Another one could be "Don't Cry Out Loud" from The Boy From Oz. Depending on gender(cause it could only work for females) you could use "Quiet Please, There's A Lady On Stage" from The Boy From Oz. One that you could do at a funeral but I'm iffy on it is "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" from SpamAlot. It's a more uplifting song than the other two and apparently is a popular song to play at funerals in London. The only other sad songs from a musical I know are connected more to the plot like "Tell Her I Love Her" from Urinetown, which you could use if you change some of the lyrics around maybe. Instead of "Her" maybe "Them" in regards to the loved ones family.
"I'm tellin' you, the only times I really feel the presence of God are when I'm having sex and during a great Broadway musical." - Nathan Lane - Jeffrey
"Chicago is it's own incredible theater town right there smack down in the middle of the heartland. What a great city! I can see why Oprah likes to live there!" - Dee Hoty :-D
You could also consider "Days of Plenty" from "Little Women"
or
"Lost In The Stars" from the Kurt Weill musical of the same name. You didn't mention how old the child was. It might be too sophisticated a concept for a child's funeral.
"A coherent existance after so many years of muddle" - Desiree' Armfelt, A Little Night Music
"Life keeps happening everyday, Say Yes" - 70, Girls, 70
"Life is what you do while you're waiting to die" - Zorba
I'd definitely recommend You'll Never Walk Alone. But if you are singing that song, make sure you don't do the jazzed-up version that Elvis sang. (I think it was Elvis... not sure)
Bring Him Home sounds too... I don't know. It's too regretful? I can't explain it. It just sounds like it'll make the audience even more sadder about the lost, unless that's what you're going for. I'd rather sing about something that speaks the positive side. (okay, I'm going a bit in a wrong direction, but you get the point)
"Hey, you! You're the worst thing to happen to musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber!"
-Family Guy
Thirded or Fourthed or whatever. This song popped into my head immediately. And as an evaluation: I would love if this was a song performed for me.
"Don't worry, it should never be seen. It's comparable to Britney's hoo-ha." - being.jeremiah in response to the High School Musical 2 logo
"You look fantastic, all you need are high heels, cake and a dream." - Amneris
