Hey guys-
I have a question. In Miami they are doing a production of this show and me, my mom and grandmother are thinking about going. Does anyone have any opinions of it that they are willing to share. Please tell what it's about if you can. Thanks for your help.

Posted: 1/29/05 at 3:06pmI LOVE this show. The music is just beautiful. If you don't know, it's more of a revue than a book show. But either way, it's really good music that will make you want to run out and buy the cast recording right after it's over. Hope you have fun!

Go see this particularly if it is an equity/professional company doing it, not a community theatre -- alot of the songs in this show really must be interpreted by experienced performers in order to give the message that they should. JRB himself has said that he doesnt like for people who are inexperienced or too young to sing alot of his stuff becuase the songs are just over their heads -- this is a trap that Songs for A New World can fall into because it is really just a revue.
[It's kind of like when young people sing things like "I'm Still Here" or "Being Alive" -- they just dont know what you have to have to sing those songs]
With that said - go and hear some beautiful music!

Posted: 1/29/05 at 6:26pmThere's a benefit performance of this tomorrow in Toronto, and I'm planning to go. How do they "set up" the story of each song? Some of the numbers require that you know the situation in which the character finds herself/himself to understand the song.

Although there's a slight thru-line for the piece, it's mostly just a musical revue of songs from abandoned JRB musicals. It's a stunning show when done right.

I went. I loved it. great performers. nothing much more than singing. AWESOME! And the actors and stage manager are member's of the Actor's Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage managers in the United States.
My personal favorite song was "Stars and the moon."
The funny thing is that in the cast (of 4 people), there was a guy I knew I saw somewhere else. His name is Kevin Smith Kirkwood and now I've read "who's who", he played Huck Finn in "Big River" which I saw in Philadelphia a few weeks ago- it was at the Deaf Regional theater. Soo cool to see the actors signing. Great experince!
