Any suggestions of theater songs for adults to perform to kids?
Next spring, I'm directing a free concert for kids, focusing on Broadway/musical theater songs. (We do these monthly concerts, and usually the focus is on classical or folk. FINALLY a Broadway concert!!!)
Our plan is four adults: two men, two women, each having at least one solo and several duets, trios, quartets. Much will depend on which songs the performers already have, but we have time to work on new or unfamiliar material.
The audience is kids of all ages. We market it towards 8-year-olds, but we have lots of toddlers, parents, grandparents... I hope this will pull in a few theater-minded teens, too.
My initial suggestions:
- Give My Regards to Broadway (the title of the show)
- I Feel Pretty (for the two women)
- Jet Song (for the two guys)
- Giants in the Sky, Steps of the Palace, and Hello Little Girl
- Happily Ever After
- Popular
- Anything You Can Do
- I Won't Grow Up
- You Gotta Have Heart

Nothing from Avenue Q! LOL
"Roxie" from Chicago? The kids I babysit for (6-11) really like that one. :) Also, "Good Morning Baltimore" from Hairspray or almost anything from the Disney shows.
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

And Starbucks will use the words 'large' and 'small', not pretentious crap like grande and tall.

I don't remember the name, but it's from Singin' in the Rain, and it goes "Good mornin', good mornin', it's great to stay up late, good mornin', good mornin' to you..."
Happiness - YAGMCB
T-E-A-M (The baseball game) - YAGMCB
Pretty much anything from BatB, especially "Belle"
Hakuna Matata- The Lion King
You can't Stop the Beat - Hairspray

Magic Foot from Spelling Bee (You can take out the cuss words)
76 Trombones from The Music Man
The Other Generation from Flower Drum Song
Let Me Entertain You from Gypsy
Who Will Buy from Oliver!
The Girl I Mean To Be from The Secret Garden
I Won't Grow Up from Peter Pan
Food, Glorious Food from Oliver!
Maybe something from Chitty?

Something from Sweet Charity? (I've never heard the music)
I Wanna Be A Producer (Producers)
My Strongest Suit (Aida)
Think of Me (Phantom of the Opera)
Will I? (RENT- I would cut the solo here and go into the part where everyone is singing at once)
Here I Am (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
What Was A Women To Do (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
Something from:
The Light in Piazza
Peter Pan
King and I (Getting to Know You)

I don't know if "kids" would like Piazza very much. Possibly Funny Girl stuff? Don't Rain....? Ahh...maybe Adelaide's Lament.
ETA: Just read about it being a concert. Then maybe not Don't Rain on my Parade...Adelaide's Lament might be a cute solo though.

Think of Me would be hard on the person "playing" Christine if she doesn't have an operatic voice...
...and I don't think little kids would understand What Was a Woman to Do?...

Sidewalk Tree from Raisen
Bigger Isn't Better from Barnum
If Mama Was Married from Gypsy
You Gotta Have Heart from Damn Yankees
The best selection would be songs that kids can relate to.
