Heya! Does anyone have any recommendations for contemporary songs set in the 1920s or 30s? I'm doing a recital exploring how the interwar period has been portrayed in musicals and am looking for a few more female solo songs
How recent do the compositions have to be?
Randy Newman wrote an art song called “In Germany, Before the War.” It’s beautiful, shockingly dark, and feels like a pastiche of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.
That is, until you check the composition date and realize it predates Sweeney by a few years.

Anything post-golden-age, so 1970s onwards.

scores to consider: Chicago, Floyd Collins, Angel, Anastasia, Coco, Follies (the flashback songs), Annie, On the Twentieth Century, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, City of Angels, The Will Rogers Follies, Steel Pier, Side Show, The Wild Party (both), Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Color Purple, The Scottsboro Boys,
You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through from FOLLIES
Actually, all the supporting character numbers in FOLLIES are meant to reflect both the time between the great wars and the characters in the early 70s. So Broadway Baby, Ah Pari/Rain on the Roof, I'm Still Here, Who's That Woman, One More Kiss.
