Songs that Should Have Been but Aren't

Many people leave "Phantom of the Opera" wondering why Raoul doesn't get a solo. For that matter, I think the Phantom needs a soliloquy. The 2004 motion picture was going to remedy that with "No One Would Listen," but the song was cut.

Can anyone else think of a show that is missing a song, either to fill in plot holes or to ensure that all the major characters get to sing?

I have always been intrigued as to how little Nathan sings in Guys and Dolls, not that its necessarily a bad thing.

There's a video of Seth MacFarlane singing "Sue Me" in a BBC concert. Since he is a classic crooner, the song feels completely different in his hands than in that of the traditional Nathan, who delivers the song in something of a comic bray most times.

Charlie Kringas Inc. writes, "The iceberg never gets a number in Titanic, and I think that's tragic."

Charlie, that's cold! (All right everyone, let's hear a collective groan!)

I'm trying to think of someone who gets left out in Les Mis, and just about everyone gets at least one decent song. The same is true in My Fair Lady, South Pacific, and Camelot.

Now that I think of it, Yenta the Matchmaker doesn't sing much in "Fiddler on the Roof." A duet with the rabbi could be very comical. Oh, well, maybe when they remake the movie.

I prefer the version of Sweeney Todd wherein Judge Turpin gets a song. Gives the character an even more perverse and pathetic angle.

Not sure every major character should get a number. Ghost Brothers of Boring County gave everyone a number and just helped grind the show on and on.

At the end of Carnival, I think it would be nice to have a song, even just a reprise, where Paul sings directly to Lili in his own voice (not a puppet character voice) for the first time. This is obviously ignoring the fact that they shouldn't be together anyway, BTW.

To borrow some other people's examples:

Apparently Sondheim, Bernstein (and Laurents?) wanted an aria in place of Maria's final speech with the gun in West Side Story, which I think was said actually just consists of 'dummy lyrics', but they could never get the song right. I find it hard to imagine a song there myself, but there ya go.

I also remember an interview with Sondheim once where the interviewer asked why there was no "Yay, I'm finally free!" song at the end of Forum for Pseudolus. Sondheim's response was something like "Oh yeah, that would have made sense... but the audience is wanting things to wrap up quickly by that point in the show."

I always thought that Ursula ought to have had a big 11 o'clock number during the climax of The Little Mermaid instead of just another short reprise. I know she had a full song in the early workshops called something like Everything Good Must End but I don't know much else about it nor why it was cut.

I did not see the revival a few years ago, but i heard an interview on Fresh Air, with Terry Gross where they discussed that Yenta was the only character that didn't grow or change- so they added a song for her in which she changes her gossipy ways.
