Could Lea Michele be the next Rose in GYPSY on Broadway?

Maybe in like fifteen years. I found her performance in Funny Girl to be unsettling in a way that would apply really well to Rose.

I think the general consensus here was that it wasn't all that great. There were a few contrarian defenders, some shills, some trolls, who liked to claim otherwise, but if memory serves most here were betting against it.

In fact, now that I've gone back and read through the thread, the outlook was quite poor poor.

It's telling that most of early positive outlooks in that thread are "hey, it might be good" and "we should be happy to have new shows" (also me on page four being like "boy i hope we don't hit that iceberg" lol). That show had stink on it from the minute it was announced.

Out of curiousity, how many other examples can we think of, of shows based on movies with songs that become attached to them, that do NOT originally have that song in the musical, and then add them in later (and it feels almost inevitable.) Shrek and Zhivago come to mi

Best Revival

My vote is for Cats (transformational, genuinely some of the most fun I've ever had at a show, and is extremely politically apt right now) and also I honest to god was like "wait, they're reviving Rocky? The boxing musical? How did I miss this?" while reading this thread lmao

I would kill for a double album that preserves the party atmosphere, "D D D D DEUTERONOMY" has been bouncing around my head like a dvd screensaver for like a year and a half.

Sondheim's MUSCLE workshop found and released
 Mar 24 2026, 05:30:26 PM

It's very interesting getting to hear these words put to the music they were written for. I've always wondered how much of an impact Lapine had on Sondheim's sound in the second half of his career, or if that sound was just the jittery engine that gave his pastiche-ier works their zip and energy. That bit where the main singer gets stuck on "in my own four walls" etc sounds almost identical to the "but he drew me close" section from Into the Wood, but also a lo

New York Gave These Broadway Shows Millions — And They Flopped Anyway

I can't believe the government wasted money funding Lempicka! Anyways, back to spending $2 billion per day on the child p*rn distraction war.

edit: to put that into perspective, that's more than one Lempicka credit ($2.6 million) every two minutes

I love the idea that the drag element is what people would find confusing and offputting, and not three hours of singing cats.

Correct. Not to mention that if it's a genocide, the Israelis have not been very successful wit

Correct. Not to mention that if it's a genocide, the Israelis have not been very successful with that mission because the numbers don't support the claims

To be fair, the thing being discussed is a central element to the play, so I'm not sure what meaningful discussion about this play would look like otherwise unless we all just want to sit here and pass around anodyne comments on the quality of the acting.

I would argue that there's a shocking amount of evidence that Israel has genocidal intent, but I guess if it doesn't come from the Genocide Region then it's just sparkling annihilation.

Anyone starting to prefer bootlegs over cast recordings?
 Mar 2 2026, 06:27:44 PM

Absolutely! The music for these shows is written to be blended by acoustic dynamics of the theatre, which contemporary cast recordings totally ignore. They're mixed so dry and tight that every single element gets sectioned off into its own vacuum-packed compartment, and not only does it make the music feel smaller, but it robs the music itself of one of its fundamental qualities.

The ur-example is the Hello Dolly revival, which sounds like a sickly child on the cast recor

Donald Trump bioplay DONALD from THE LEHMAN TRILOGY author Stefano Massini sets UK premiere
 Feb 28 2026, 03:38:12 PM

There's a reason the best plays about Hitler don't actually feature Hitler, and I think the same applies to Trump. The impact he's had on people is much more interesting than the man himself, who is so well-documented and shallowly psychotic that there's very little to actually excavate dramatically. I don't know if a Trump-centric play would be anything more than a back-patting political cartoon, when what's really needed is an exorcism in the average living room.

I would much rather see every single person in the Trump administration rotting in prison.

John Doyle: Trigger warnings risk ‘mollycoddling’ theatre audiences

a woman is held down in a back alley and [blanked] for fifteen minutes. every night she wakes up in a cold sweat and every day she has to fight back panic attacks. her friend takes her to a play that, unexpectedly, features a woman being [blanked] onstage. while she's crying on a bench in the lobby, john doyle comes over and kicks her in the shins for being a big stupid baby who can't handle being challenged by art. somewhere, a right-wing journalist experiences a frisson of deli
