It's just impossible for it to live up to expectations of any kind, let alone carve out its own niche. The Shaiman/Wittman score has about a fifth of the effortless magic of Bricusse/Newley's, the structure means the first act is a tedious and mostly Wonka-free slog, and the countless revisions have never been able to settle on a consistent tone. There are parts I love but on the whole it's a constipated mess.
