Has anyone seen the stage version of, "The Sound of Music"? If so, what exactly are the ensemble members? I've only seen the movie and was wondering about this for a while.
Do they sing any songs?

I saw a touring production of this a while ago. I don't remember it that well, other than the fact that I was bored beyond belief. Stick with the movie. It's better.
Well in the broadway cast it says there was an ensemble. What did that ensemble do?
Probably not much. I don't really remember them....I don't even remember there being an ensemble besides the small extra parts. I guess the nuns and the troops would be considered the ensemble.
Do Re Me is a big group number. They are also at the family's performance. Also, the woman are nuns. The men are nazis. Ect.
I'm not sure if just children's theatre does it this way, but Lonely Goat heard is often down with people acting it out as the puppets.

Ensemble members in the show are nuns, troop guard people, and guests at the party at the von Trapp house.
The ensemble isn't in Do Re Mi, it's the kids and Maria.
When I did it, the only big ensemble parts were at the party. It really isn't an ensemble heavy show. They don't have much to sing. If you're a girl, you'll probably be an extra nun in a few parts and a guest at the party. If you're a guy, you'll have little singing, and probably be a part guest and an ad-libbing Nazi. Not a great show to be in the chorus.
I saw "The Lonely Goat Herd" done with the gayest chorus boys I've ever seen in my entire life. I mean, we're talking on a Jack McFarland level. Then they all became Nazis in the second act.
Needless to say, it was a memorable experience.
My first stage credit was in the ensemble of The Sound of Music. Luckily the show was great and had a great cast or I would have been bored out of my wits! I didn't come onstage until the party scene at the end of Act 1 (well over an hour into the show). I was one of the guests and got to sing one word, "Goodbye!", at the end of "So Long, Farewell". Then, I had to go backstage and sit again until I came out towards the end of the second act when I played a Nazi guard at the singing competition. My final scene was as the lieutenent who's shadow only is seen on the wall in the abbey after Rolf sees the Von Trapps and lets them escape (a difference from the movie). Speaking of Rolf, Dan Truhitte, who played Rolf in the movie is who played Captain Von Trapp in our production.

I got my Equity card playing Maria in this show, and Enjolras has it right. It's not a bad show for a woman in the ensemble, as you have several opportunities to sing as a nun, but for a guy, it's pretty minimal. You're basically an extra.
Lonely goatheard is just Maria and the kids durring the storm. no emsemble and usually no puppetts
