Alex Newell figured out how to rig the game.

He identifies as males but continually paints himself in the public light as if he's a Transgender Female.

It's a bit of a scam.... but what a great gambit to make sure that you can be seen for both male and female roles...

(but also why does he rub me the wrong way?)

Sorry, but Alex Newell was spectacular in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and who cares how he identifies? And love that Jose Llana will be singing Cable, wish i could be there!

See... there seems to be two Alex's performing in OOTI.

Half of my friends who saw him got an amazing performance, half of my friends who saw him said he was sleepwalking through it and faking his money notes.

He may be a good performer but he's not a consistent performer.  And you need to be good and consistent to be a working stage performer.

It’s a shame Cusack is just doing one song. She was an amazing Nellie on tour. It’s the only time I’ve gone back to see the same cast in a show. She was that good. Leaps and bounds better than O’Hara.

Agreed - I thought Alex Newell was beyond obnoxious and terrible when I saw him in Once On This Island.

I saw it in June and I agree about Newell who I was initially excited to see. Pre-show (I had most interaction with Newell), when the cast is interacting for the audience to hear (I was right in front of the hot plate) he started chastising (jokingly) another cast member for calling out of a previous performance. She reminded him that wasn’t “Island” talk. He quickly change gears and said she had called out and not come down to the island. How hard is it to stay in character for a 90-minute show? His one big song was great though.

Newell annoyed the tar out of me on GLEE, but he was excellent in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND.

Newell openly discusses his gender identity and does not paint himself as trans but as non-conforming. Seems a bit more telling of you than of him that you find his gender expression a "scam."
