I expected so much more from the production, especially after hearing all the good word of mouth. Kelli O'Hara's performance was at best mediocre, and would Bartlett Sher please tell Matthew Morrison to stop hamming it up. Matthew's performance to me was the biggest disappointment of all. I felt the transitions from backstage to the front of the stage during the Thanksgiving Follies were annoying, as well as of the sailors tearing down the set when the follies was over.
Please put Kelli in a regular's sailor's uniform during the Honey Bun number, and she needs to really shampoo her hair and get wet when she sing "I'm Gonna Wash...." (The chorus girls mopping up the stage with their feet and towels was ridiculous.)
I enjoyed it. I thought Kelli seemed rather whooped when I saw it (wednesday matinee), but other than that I had none of the problems you encountered. I thought it was a much darker take on the piece, which I really enjoyed. As for Matthews performance, it was a tad over the top but the entire book is borderline over the top for most of the show.
I think Bartlett's a fantastic director and I am certain I wouldn't have enjoyed the show half as much with another director.
She washes her hair.
She kind of washes her hair. It looks like she puts pre-existing foam in her hair and swishes it around.
The song's not titled "I'm Gonna Dampen My Hair....".

And they're not in the Pacific either! I thought they were giving everyone plane tickets and transport the audience to the islands.
I want a refund.
Funny: you thought Matthew Morrison was too hammy; I thought that he barely registered. I guess we can just both agree that he's miscast.
I saw it today 3/23 with Andrew Samonsky as Lt. Cable and I thought he gave a great performance and his voice is among the most beautiful I have ever heard. Perhaps I am lucky that Matthew Morrison wasn't there today?
I saw it this afternoon as well Steve, and thought Andrew was WONDERFUL!! What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.

Me three re Samonsky. I thought he made sense of the most difficult character in the piece. Haunted by the horrors of war, determined to risk his life for a country that he loves and loathes, in love with a girl he can barely speak to - and his songs go really high. Samonsky stitched it all together effortlessly. God knows what he'd do with significant rehearsal and stage time.
I also have to sing the praises of Steve2, whose generosity, kindness, and intelligence bring honor to this board.
I'm glad everyone's being so supportive of the understudy, Andrew Samonsky! But I LOVED Morrison's performance when I saw it. Just to throw in another opinion.
And "Please put Kelli in a regular's sailor's uniform during the Honey Bun number, and she needs to really shampoo her hair and get wet when she sing "I'm Gonna Wash...." (The chorus girls mopping up the stage with their feet and towels was ridiculous.)"
What do you mean by a regular sailor's uniform? You mean a tighter- fitting one? The large uniform is a gag that has existed since the original. Check out Mary Martin:
I didn't find anything odd with the amount of shampoo- ing and water during "I'm Gonna Wash..." I think if the water was enough to get her entire head and also entire bathing suit soaked (which it was at the performance I saw), that was fully sufficient. After all, in reality, they didn't have a lot of water or shampoo to go around considering rations while being nurses overseas.
