Spamalot...... overrated?

To be honest, as funny a show as Spamalot was, it is not really best musical worthy. I pretty much that it is like watching an episode of Monty Phyton but live. It is a very funny show, but you aren't touched by it, and there isn't really any heart in it, and while the songs are great, they are not beautiful songs, like Light in the piazza, and DRS is just such a brillant show with an amazing cast. The cast of Spamalot is amazing but nobody too be honest sings as well as Butz in DRS, or Victoria Clark or Gary Beach. The guys in Spamalot were funny, but there performance didn't touch me, they just made me laugh. I think that the show that wins best musical should be a show with more depth. Doest anyone else feel that Spamalot is overrated?

I haven't seen it yet. Even though I do think it will win, this years Tony's seem like a hype-fest.

I saw it when it premiered in Chicago and absolutly loved it! I think there is a lot more that goes into making a show the best than just heart. Spamalot blew me away. I am sure the others are just as amazing however I must admit I am a tad biased for only having seeing this show out of the for noms.

I loved Spamalot too, but I agree, DRS is better, and for all the same reasons you stated, Born2.

I somewhat agree with you tagiunagi, Piazza actually has beautiful music which none of the other shows can say.

I just don't understand how people can listen to Spam or DRS!! The songs make no sense out of context and DRS lyrics are atrocious. Piazza is actually good.

If you say the songs make no sense out of context, you must be opposed to integrated musicals. Unless you mean they don't work on the album unless one has seen the shows.

I didn't like Spamalot- thought it was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen.
I liked Spelling Bee, but just because it was funny- definitely no best musical.
I thought LITP was ok, a bit too operatic for my tastes.
And I liked DRS and found it quite funny, and hope it wins Best Musical.

I agree, I hope DRS wins this year. Spelling Bee is funny, but not the best musical. LITP is also very good, but I think DRS will win.

YEs, I think it is overrated, but I did enjoy it much more than I was told I would. I expected a full show of pure movie, but I really don't think that's the case at all. It was my least favorite of the 4 nominees this year, but I do think it has a place and some value.

Loved Spam but think DRS deserves to win . Spam's score is paper thin but it does have 3 o4 very good numbers. Take away those written for other Python movies, & you have a mere handful of classics ( The Song That Goes Like This, His Name is Lancelot, The Bway/Jew Song)

I'm not sure I agree DRS is any more deserving than Spamalot......they are both very similar.......both weak, musically. But both made me smile and laugh, and I LOVED them......Spamalot will win best musical...does it deserve it? Nope.....

Hmm... I must disagree. I don't think Spamalot is overrated at all! I thought it had a lot of heart, especially with "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" and "Find Your Grail".

I have not seen any of the other shows nominated, so I don't know if it deserves Best Musical, but I do think that it is a really fun show that has great music and a good message. I will be happy if it wins.

Of the 3 of the 4 musicals we have seen we rate them as follows:

1. DRS
2. Spam
3. Piazza.

We found Spam very enjoyable but liked DRS better

By the way, to those who saw it in Chicago, what did the Cow Song & Witch number sound like? Just watched the movie. Whole sections of dialog were lifted from the movie so how Idle gets full writing credit for Spam escapes me. There are many omissions of parts in the movie not in the show .

I guess it depends, at least in part, on what one means by "overrated". I don't think "Spamalot" ever pretended to be anything more than what it is...it's a fun, silly, enjoyable night in the theatre. Whether it deserves to be named Best Musical is another question. It seems almost ridiculous to have a show like "Spamalot" and one like "Light in the Piazza" competing in the same category - to say it's comparing apples and oranges is putting it mildly. I haven't seen "Piazza", but I've seen "Spamalot", "DRS" and "Spelling Bee", and it wouldn't upset me to see any of them win.

To be honest, as much as I like them, ALL the shows nominated are overrated.
I heard Spamalot was hilarious, but it's more like "giggle-giggle" funny.
I heard DRS was brilliant, and it's merely amusingly clever.
I heard that Light in the Piazza was gorgeous, but it's sorta boring and over-orchestrated.

I don't care who wins anymore.
