Posted: 5/23/05 at 10:13pmI would not say much, but I know how you felt.. I saw it twice (I got 4 tickets when it was still in preview, since I knew it is going to be a huge hit (anyway) and would be impossible to get tickets), and for a real MP fan and British comedy fan, it sure was a disappointment to some extent. I cannot explain exactly, but something was off for me. Watching MP over 15 years and still I cannot explain...I cannot evaluate Spamalot as a Broadway production, but as a MP production, it was frustrating. And in regards to the audience...I think you were unlucky. I sat next to a woman eating snack the whole time at "Doubt" and I was this close to punch her.

Mandy - exactly. There was something, or the lack of something, that by the end it didn't seem right. It didn't feel like it should be on Broadway.
I sat front row at Hairspray once, next to a man chewing gum loudly. I swear I was going to stand up and punch him.

Posted: 6/5/05 at 10:54pmI have to say, I went into Spamalot expecting the best (as I too am an avid Monty Python Fan) and left experiencing the worst. I agree with those people who said that it lacked something that the original had. I'll tell you what it was: intelligence. The musical was a dumbed down version of the movie. I'll give you an example of what I mean: I was sitting with a bunch of college theatre students at the show, none of who have seen any of the original Python movies or Circus. They all LOVED the stupid, added in, slap-you-in-the-face comedy that Idle added to the musical, but they missed so many of the original jokes because they were too complex for them to gather. The shiow included so many pop culture references that I wanted to puke. (I almost got out and left when they mentioned Britney Spears). Let's face it, the show was made so that Eric Idle could make money since he hasn't done anything else useful in a long time. In doing so, he made a show that dumb audiences will love. It has campy music, stupid jokes, and bad performances by established actors (Curry). The only redeeming quality of the show is the bits from the movie, but I could just watch the original for that. And I don't want to ruin the end of the show for anyone, but think of the best happy ending you can, one that your grandmother would love to watch, and that is exactly what you get at the end of Spamalot. Come one, where is the dark comedy that they were so famous for? For those of you who love stupidity without the cleverness, this is the show for you. For those of you expecting "Something Completely Different," well the only thing you'll get is something completely different from what you're used to from Monty Python.
