It's popular to bash popular shows. Makes you cool... or something. *shrugs* I love Spamalot. Sorry if that makes me un-cool. I also enjoyed Wicked, (never was a screaming groupie, though.. eep)
And, yeah. I knew about premium seating. The ticket website has a link for it for pretty much every performance. And they're the best seats in the house, to boot. If you're willing to pay $300 a seat, I guess...
This isn't new, though. Anyone remember what PREMIUM seats were for The Producers back in the Broderick and Lane days? I seem to recall something far more than this "staggering" $300.

Posted: 10/6/05 at 11:14amThere are usually single seats available for many of the Spamalot performances---that's how I got tickets for afew of the times I went/am going. And if you don't want to spend the money, don't--it's not like they are forcing you to go. And for a college student (I'm not a student, but I'm on a budget), they do have reasonably priced SRO tickets available, if you are so inclined.

The way i look at it, i already spending a lot to fly to NY, get a hotel, etc .... i'm not gonna pay a bit for ****ty seats, when i can pay more for better seats.
In the end its worth it but oh well. People griping on the difference between 50 and 100 dollars? thats not really much. I mean i have to spend 70 dollars for a decent hockey ticket, and they are playing LOTS of times.

Posted: 10/6/05 at 2:00pmThat is absolutely obscene. It would be bad enough to pay that much for a decent show, but something as over-rated as Spamalot, it's highway robbery! The sad thing is, people will actually pay that much (and probably more).

Posted: 10/6/05 at 2:07pmWell, I work hard for my money, and I find Spamalot to be funny and a welcome respite from everyday stress (laughter truly is the best medicine!). If you think it's so over-rated, don't waste your money.

"Overrated" is in the eye of the beholder...as is "***ty". Given the continued strong sales for Spamalot, it's a pretty fair bet that the vast majority of the people who see the show do not share those opinions, no matter how many people here seem to. I loved it, thought it was worth every penny, and would have gone back if I didn't live so darn far away.

Posted: 10/6/05 at 2:30pmThat's outrageous, everytime I buy a ticket here in Chicago for $80 (Orch) Iget this horrible feeling in my stomach...they need to stop raising the prices or make it so students get cheaper tickets! or at least Musical Theatre students :)

Posted: 10/6/05 at 5:49pmYou might think it's absurd they do that for what you call a sh*tty show, but what they're doing is pretty clever. Seeing as how popular the show it, many would do anything for tickets. So basically they could put any price on them and people would still buy them (when they're available).

Posted: 10/6/05 at 5:55pmIts really a shame that Broadway shows are getting to be so expensive. I haven't seen Spamalot yet because every time I have been to NYC since it opened, its been sold out. Not to mention I am not much of Monty Python fan so I am afraid my money would be wasted on jokes I didn't get. Is Spamalot that good?

It's not that Spamalot is that good, it's just in a different vein. It's funny. VERY funny. Rent "Monty Python & The Holy Grail". If you laugh at the movie, you'll laugh at the show. The actors are great in this, and it's the supporting characters that have the best songs (well, not ALL of them!). I've seen it 3 times so far (yes, I'm a tad obsessed!), and have tickets to two more shows (and I live 300+ miles from NYC). I don't regret a single penny of it, and I've laughed my tush off. Try standing room---that's reasonable, and not too bad (I did that once).

I know there's debate on this point...but I saw "Holy Grail" in college, and was underwhelmed. I tried watching it again shortly before seeing Spamalot, and didn't get past the "bring out your dead" scene. But I adored Spamalot anyway! I've seen similar reactions from other non-Python fans (and, on the other side of the coin, there are the Python fans who were disappointed in Spamalot). So enjoying Monty Python isn't necessarily the litmus test one would believe it to be.

You are indeed correct, but at least it gives one an idea of what to expect. And it is different, in that it may be MP sketches, but it isn't MP performing, which is a whole different take on the matter. You are wise, oh LadyoftheLake!

Spamalot is a good time, but it's lacking in a few departments, like the coherent book and good score ones. It just depends on how much you value such things.
I'm not about to pay $100 for a ticket, much less $110. As long as there's student rush and I still am planning on a PhD, I can despair at costs without having to actually confront them. Yes, prices will always rise, but look at the costs of Broadway tickets compared to inflation. They've increased a lot more over the last ten years. It's almost as bad as college textbooks.

Posted: 10/7/05 at 3:49amRegardless of what you think about Spamalot, this is important news, it means other Broadway shows may follow. Which worries me. If theatre is not accessable, then its existance/substance is in danger.

Wise?? Nah. (Heck, at this hour of the morning I'm barely coherent). I was just working from personal experience there. And actually, thinking I had "an idea of what to expect" worked against me. I didn't like the movie and wasn't a Monty Python fan. Had I not been a huge Tim Curry fan, there's no way I would have ever bought a ticket to Spamalot. I figured I'd enjoy watching Tim, but be lukewarm at best about the production as a whole. I did indeed enjoy watching him, but I loved the entire show - much to my astonishment!
