She is a wonderful designer and creator of images. But that's not the director's main job.

As a fan of Spiderman and Taymor, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed it didn't work out, that I'm set for a morbid academic exercise on Apr15, Lost in La Mancha 2.0
But I can't imagine it's worse than the Clone Saga (Peter Parker was never the real Spiderman, some newcomer was) or One More Day, where Marvel editorial decided it was less offensive for Spiderman to dissolve his marriage by bartering with Satan than to get a divorce.
I honestly can't think of a musical storyline in which Spiderman would work. It shouldn't have even been attempted.

I have to give props for the Metropolis look too.
It's my impression comics are a tough thing to adapt, given the serial nature but not impossible. I would say there's a problem right off the bat if Taymor was only familiar with the movies. I would say something like the death of Gwen Stacy collection is a good place to start. It's not a movie rehash. The first act is about Peter getting serious with Gwen and ignoring MJ's advances, the death of Gwen's father causing a rift between Peter and Gwen, MJ encourages Gwen to forgive Peter, the two resume their relationship and the act ends with Gwen's death. So act 2 is the hunt for the Green Goblin, MJ being there for Peter, etc.
Whatever one thinks of Wicked (And I'm not a huge fan of it myself), it does attempt to do something human. Spiderman does not.
I think the nicest possible thing to do to anyone who thinks Spider-Man can compare to Merrily is to banish them to Vegas for the rest of their life.
Off subject here, but I just watched Across the Universe and wow... I forgot how freaking weird this movie was. Taymor's biggest problem is that she doesn't know when to stop. What starts out as a good idea just turns terrible because she keeps going and going with it and takes it too far.
WHO HERE HAS FALLEN FROM THE SKY? WHO? WHO?!
hahahaha
The title of this thread made me laugh. Thanks...I needed that!
