Exactly! ANYTHING can be a musical--it's all about execution as Plum said.
Let's freakin wait for a script or maybe an opening night before we trash something. Haven't we learned from history??

Posted: 7/8/04 at 2:13pmWhile the idea of Superman the musical scared me, Spiderman the musical doesn't seem as bad...I think it could be done, it could even be done well. Let's just see what happens--they're gonna have to get a SUPER fit actor, though...maybe they'll get the costumes from Universal Studios (IOA)...

>> Look- in the abstract, why is a musical about Spider-Man any more preposterous than one about a cannibal barber?
Because it smacks of opportunism, not unlike SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER or (God, I dread writing this title) FOOTLOOSE. At the very least, IABIAPIS was camp fun, with no pretensions of being serious.
You're right: we should withhold judgment until it actually hits the boards... but I aint holdin' my breath for this one. :)

Posted: 7/8/04 at 2:25pmLike Marc Shaiman said earlier in the thread, Spider-Man is character driven and not action driven (which Superman is all about). Fot this to work, the director and writers have to dive into the characters psyche and let it be more like......for a better or worse example......RENT. I mean RENT has characters with real problems and it shows their faults. Spider-Man has to do the same thing. That is why the movies and comics are so successful. Peter is like the rest of us, and if they do not show that in the musical, it is doomed to fail.

If you have seen Spider-man 2, you should notice that most of the movie doesn't even deal with a superhero. I felt like I was watching a romantic comedy. It was almost Woody Allen-ish.
Julie Taymor is a goddess. Don't give up hope on it.
On another note, I shudder to see Peter Parker bursting out in song.
Here's an idea. The only songs will be sung by MJ. She's an actress, right? It could be a sorta Dirty Blonde type deal.
Just a thought.

Hooray for angsty superheroes!
And yes, if they want this to succeed, the main character has to be a human being. If it's just a guy singing and swinging around in a spandex suit, it's a circus act, not a musical.

hey, they could even keep in Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and Donna Murphy as his wife!!! OF COURSE THIS CAN BE A BROADWAY SHOW....going back to sleep now.
oh, and i loved the second movie...maybe i'll go see it again...

NOOOOO!!!!
Hah...the thing i hate most about this is I was writing a Spider-man musical...I figured nobody else would be crazy enough to also do it. GAH...It actually had some good songs too. With an Act 1 closer that was scarily like Defying Gravity, which i wrote way before Wicked ever came out...Hah
Oh well...time to move on to my other ideas. maybe I can recycle some songs.

It's wierd, my first thought of Spider Man the musical was ick ack and gag. And then I started thinking...
During Spider Man 2 there was a point when I stopped and randomly said outloud (without really realizing it), "If this were a musical, there would be a song right here."
'Wait', I thought 'Do I actually want Peter Parker to start singing? Do I really and truly want to see MJ break into song?' I thought some more,
'No, not really.'
Then, I read this thread. It never occured to me that it was actually being considererd as a musical. And now the more I think about it, it might not be such a bad idea. If done right, it really could come out rather good. I'd give it a chance.

Hah.. I had designed a costume that stays true to the idea but lets his mouth show (sort of like Batman). And if ANYONE can figure out how to show this stuff it is Ms. Taymor
