I don't understand why spending $40 million on a show is bad. Its the producers money to spend - and they will probably be employing many actors, designers, house staff, crew etc. It can only be for the good of the Broadway economy ... unless the show completely flops, something I see as very unlikely.
Speaking to a friend of mine who has contacts at Universal and access to Spiderman info, Universal are thinking of charging a top price of $175 for top seats at The Hilton Theatre next year. At todays rate thats £125 top ticket. Bottom ticket will be in the region of $100.
You answered a question I wanted to ask and that was who are the Producers and to my horror it is another multi-global organisation, with Disney doing there usual shows, Universal doing Wicked and Dreamworks doing Shrek, they seem to be taking over Broadway.
And they're planning on selling well? Even with the recognisability factor of Spider-Man, I can't think of what demographic they're hoping to sell to at those prices.
I can see this show ending up like the Lord of the Rings of Broadway. They will be torn to shreds in reviews, except for praise of the sets/effects. They will be completely snubbed for Tonys/Drama Desks but that won't matter to the producers who will keep funneling money into it in the hope it catches on - it won't
