I have friend who knows someone who was called in like a week ago for Spring Awakening. Why are they casting now? Isn't way it too early for Broadway replacements and no tour has been announced. Odd.

Posted: 1/31/07 at 3:42pmI know someone connected with the show, I'll try to find out...my guess is that now that the show is popular and will probably be around a while, they're adding a couple of extra stand-bys/swings/understudies. As it is, there are only two extra of each sex without name parts in the ensemble, and even those are onstage during the show every night!!! (The adults each have a standby, of course.) So not much wiggle room...and I am sure some vacations, etc. are coming due....

An actor can leave the show usually after 3 or 6 months if they've been cast as a lead in another show. People can have different outs written into their contracts- so you never know.
Friends of mine have been called in for things months before the job would begin.

I posted this on another thread a few days ago but thought it would fit in here as well:
"I just saw the show again tonight and both Jon Groff and Johnny Gallagher told me that they intend on staying with the show until they get kicked out...GOOD NEWS!!!"
Doesn't speak for the rest of the cast but at least we know these two will be around for a while!

I'd *imagine* Lea's not leaving any time soon either- I mean, she's only been working on it for the last 7 years
not to say that anythings permanent- there's alwyas the possibility that something could come up and ANY of them could end up leaving sooner than expected, but its really nice to know that they have no current intentions of doing so!

I dont know why any of them would leave this soon anyway. I mean, they are living the dream! Creating and Starring in new amazing roles in a new BROADWAY show with Rave reviews that is blowing up before our eyes! I mean they are on top of the world. I know if that was me, I would be in Spring Awakening until they asked me to leave too. haha

I know, seriously! this is like, the type of show that if they were in ANOTHER show and got offered a part, they'd leave to be in! lol
although... just thinking logically, the cast of RENT was kind of along the same lines and some of them, Daphne imparticular, left fairly early right? not VERY early or anything, but pretty soon considering how huge the show was and everything. Or did the others just stay an unusually LONG time? haha (I know anthony did)

Posted: 1/31/07 at 5:57pmThere aren't any auditions or open calls coming up. This casting they are doing is from people they have on file who probably already auditioned for the show and like got 500 callbacks. No huge casting search. ... yet. lol

Posted: 1/31/07 at 6:35pmI think Lauren is right. I have friend in the ensemble, and he originally auditioned for the Atlantic production, and didn't get cast. But when they moved to B'way, they called him then.

Posted: 1/31/07 at 8:10pmthey are casting an understudy for melchior/hanschen. he will just be a standby for those roles. the ensemble member who was covering the parts didn't work out so they are casting a new person just to cover.

#11re: Spring Awakening...still casting?
Posted: 1/31/07 at 10:08pmYeah they need another swing because they don't have enough swings to cover if 1 lead and 1 ensemble were out.

Posted: 1/31/07 at 10:12pmactually the adult understudies cover the ensemble so even is there were two performers out they still have two performers to fill the ensemble.

Here's a quick quote from the interview with Gideon Glick on Oasis mag:
"How long are you going to be in the show now?
My thoughts are until the next fall semester, then I'm going to go to college and get a degree."
Here's a link to the whole article for anyone who is interested or missed it:

Posted: 2/4/07 at 12:47amI just wanted to pipe in and say I saw the show last night and loved it. I think more than anything, I loved all of the energy and enthusiasm the cast had. I don't have the recording yet, but want it real bad.

If i had to guess, they might not have known/decided when they cast the swings for the transfer that those people were going to end up being on stage every night. Now they have a bunch of understudies but only two true swings, so they're tightly squeezed for covers. So they're casting more. Just a guess.
I hope they're casting more young folks. Apparently the adult swings understudy the ensemble right now, which defeats the purpose a little I think (though I'm sure they're wonderful).
Curious about stagegrrrl's comment about the ensemble member "not working out." Right now Jon Wright and Robert Hager understudy Melchior. Hmmm.

I think they may be getting more covers for Wendla and Melchior. The only person they have to cover for Wendla is Phoebe Strole who is a regular cast member. They have one regular cover for Melchior and then the second cover is Johnathan Wright. I think they don't want regular cast members being first covers.
