I figured Mary Poppins was, but I wasn't sure if there had to be some percentage of music that was new to be nominated for score. Since a number of the songs aren't new, I didn't know how it gets considered.
Elligible? geez, it must be late if my spelling is this bad :)

Yeah, pretty much a lot of the score has to be original. There was a time when that wasn't so (for some weird reason.)
The Lion King had only three new songs and was nominated for Best Score.
Tommy's score has been around since the 60s and it tied with Kiss of the Spider Woman for Best Score.
I'm still waiting to see it in February to make my final judgement. I still have high hopes for this show.

Hated it. It tries too hard. How much teenage angst can anybody take?
"How much teenage angst can anybody take?"
BINGO!
Much of the score isn't angry or angsty but rather lush and melodious. I thought the kids were so open and refreshingly irony free, completely honest and plausible, not "put on". You must have thought that RENT was too angsty when it came out.."how many characters with AIDS do we really need before we get it??"
