So today at the show Remy ran off stage after "My Junk" and Jen Damiano (sp?) followed to get into costume and go on as Thea. The same thing happened with Lauren Pritchard...apparently she ran off stage sick with Krysta right behind her getting into costume. And she was out for like 4-5 days. Jon Wright was ill with something and missed performances and the CD signing at Virgin. Gideon has been out sick...and actually was out Today again! It just seems this cast gets sick a lot. I understand people get sick, but this cast is out often and it is sooooo early in a show's opening months. They don't seem like they like to rough it. I have seen many performers get through entire shows ill. Like "bucket in the wings to catch vomit" ill. They also seem to rely on the understudies a lot. Like its no big deal to miss a show because they have understudies waiting to go on. I don't know. This cast just seems to be sick and out of the show a lot....I am just suprised because SA just opened! Groff and Michele still havent missed a show correct?

Remy was very sick with bronchitis (after just getting over a bad case of pneumonia and bronchitis). She wanted to go on today because there were some people that she knew in the audience and wanted to try and get through the show so that they could see her. But, she was too sick.

Posted: 3/4/07 at 10:53pmI wasn't being rude or anything...I just find it odd. I just see Groff and Lea, who I am pretty sure havent missed a show, stay consistant and I am sure they have been sick. I think these kids should get some Vitamin C. lol

Sounds like a nasty bug.
The best thing a sick actor can do is STAY HOME! Otherwise everyone gets sick!

Groff,Michele, and Gallagher have not missed a show on Broadway or from The Atlantic. I was about to say something about this cast, they seem to have people out A LOT.It seems like the younger performers aren't "roughin' it." It seems that the leads are the only people who are roughin it because I've heard stories of all three being sick. I read that after Remy went off stage after My Junk she watched Act 2 from the mezzanine!

Throwing up (or any stomach problems) backstage IS THE WORST.
Get these kids some Vitamin C, Echinacea and Airborne!

Posted: 3/4/07 at 11:04pmWell, and do go along with it, this is NOT a show that you can have someone in the wings to catch your vomit in a bucket. Not with an audience onstage. So that might have a large amount to do with the cast being out.

Posted: 3/4/07 at 11:06pmGuess what? People are human and get sick, especially during the winter months. In shows where everyone is in close proximity of one another, it is only natural that if one person gets sick it will quickly circulate throughout the cast. Happens on every show. Doesn't matter if people are young or old.

As broadwayguy said, people get sick. if you were paying $100 would you rather see a subpar performance because the actor was very sick but decided to go on anyway? Or would you rather see a healthy understudy? People don't go off on rants when somebody misses work in an office, I really don't see the difference...if you are sick, you are sick and you need to take time to get better.
And Remy went up to the mezzanine to see someone and then went home becuase she wasn't feeling well...in case you were wondering.

"I wasn't being rude or anything..."
Sure. You were just being obnoxious, repeating the same thing over and over. Have you ever performed 8 shows a week in a small cast where everyone remains on stage for the entire show? No? People get sick. Sicknesses tend to be contagious, which means that the people you are normally in close proximity with can easily catch the sicknesses from you. Are you following? Cut these actors a break. Part of live theatre is that the show must go on, and this is why understudies exist.

Posted: 3/4/07 at 11:16pmThe cast of Spring Awakening is so small and there really is no ensemble, so of course everyone knows when someone's out because they have to put the understudy board up. However, at a big show like Wicked with a huge ensemble, there are JUST as many people out on a given performance, except no one would ever know because the theatre is not required to post who is covering for ensemble members. It seems like there are so many people out, but it's just the same as any other show.

I'm sorry - I love the kids in this cast, but (having sat onstage twice) the idea of them throwing up all around me is kind of funny. Imagine if everyone in the onstage seats started vomiting and then the AUDIENCE started too ala Stand By Me!

Hearing these stories cringe, I feel bad for them, especially that story with Lea!
Last year for my senior show, my last show out of doing them for years throughout high school I went with "the bucket." I ate contaminated food at the cast party the night before and was up the whole night/day with severe illness and I'll spare all the details. I admire her determination in not missing the shows despite how horrible it must be.
As for the rest, I can only hope they have a healthy recovery.

What did they do about the spots for the swings onstage since there were three out the other day?
I'm sure they're not wanting to purposely be out. This is, for most of them, their first Broadway show, and I'm sure they're extremely excited to be in it. I don't think they'd skip out on something they love doing as much as this.
