Whoa..relax...That was ignorant. I have worked both office jobs and stage jobs and I assure you that I have a lot of responsibilty.
People expect performers to be 100%, always with a smile on their face at all times. Sometimes, it just doesn't work like that.
When you are in an office, you can be stuffy-nosed or have a stomache ache and it's ok to not have a smile on your face. You can quasi-rleax at your desk and remain seated, etc etc.
Performers can't do that. They have to act as if nothing is wrong and they use their bodies to make their living and sometimes your body just doesn't want to.
that's all....no need to get upset or start throwing insults.
Now that this thread has turned a tad sour (as they all tend to at some point for some unknown reason) I am going to eat my sammich.
Bye guys.

Was Remy out for the 2pm show on Sunday(3/4/07)? Because I was there last night setting on stage(OMG I loved it!) and Remy was there and in the show. The only U.S. that was on was Robi for Gideon.
We have a performance director for our tour who is basically our director. He travels with us and performs the all the same jobs as our director in production did. As for producers I was purely thinking about a certain situation when we were doing an important week of performances and one of our "producers" was there and specifically asked for an understudy to go on for one of our leads because he had a cold.
Anyway.. I'm just saying that they have the authority to take someone out of a show.. I wouldn't doubt it's happened before.

I used to have co-workers who, when their kids were too sick to go to school, would bring them to work with them!!!!
Millie315: How was Robi last night??
musicalsfan: Thanks for not getting personal and for not ruining an otherwise fine thread. Don't you hate it when that happens? I'm amazed that, after your bad work experiences, you don't seem the least bit bitter! I am only 46 years old and have been working in offices in a big city for only 20 years, so it's good to finally learn about the reality of the work world.
It's not illness........
OBVIOUSLY.

Robert Hager was in for Gideon. He was alright. Not great. Copied Gideons acting it seemed in the scene between Ernst and Hanschen. He doesnt have a strong stage presence. And doesnt have a strong voice. He was alright. Not awful. Just not great. And again, like Gerard but not as much, he appears a lot younger than the rest of guys in the show.
I'm not in the industry. I was in two musicals in high school and danced locally for several years when I was younger but that is as far as it goes. From an "outsider's" perspective, or simply as a member of the audience, I would rather see an understudy than a sickly performer who is doing a less-than-standard job.
Not too mention that, as many others have already said, being sick can basically suck the life out of you. I think it is unfair to expect the performers to go on when they are vomitting or running high fevers, etc. I work in the food service industry and am appalled at how often the management expects employees to come to work ill, despite the fact that we are serving food to the public and highly contagious!
I've also worked in corporate style offices and can say the same thing. Everyone is expected to come to work sick, but I'd imagine it would be easier to do an office job while sick as oppoesed to being onstage performing for thousands of people.
I once saw a show where the lead was out sick and so was the understudy, so they pulled another understudy from an out of town performance (and I am not making this up!) If that starts happening in SA then I think it is time to worry, but for now, they have the swings, so why not use them?

One thing that's for sure if SA is in desperate need of more understudies. Besides the fact the half the times I've seen it there have only been 3 chorus members, there are only two understudies for boys and two for girls. When I went saturday Krysta and Jenn were on. What if Phoebe hadn't been able to go on? What would have happened? Would they have called someone in, put Francis on? They need more understudies, which I think they're casting for. But as a real question, what would happen if 3 girls or boys were out?
^True. I think they should have two more swings. One for the boys and one for the girls.

Not to mention they could actually put a teen on in the ensemble then.
"Not to mention they could actually put a teen on in the ensemble then."
What? Jennifer Damiano is 15 and is in the ensemble.
oh yes, like you never get sick. look over here everyone! mr.immunity!
and to agree with foster, you just notice it more because everyone in this show actualy has a part, and there aren't ensemble members save for the stage-sitters. so the impacts seem greater when one person is out, because every part is significant. that's all.
and this probably the youngest collective cast on broadway in years, many on broadway for the first time, adjusting. so seirously, stop your complaining and just let it be. you can't help when a person gets sick nor can they, it's not like they want to not go on. but if you were brutally ill, wouldn't you try and get healthy for the next performance as opposed to going on and risking the next 3? so, i praise them for being smart and trying to take better care of themselves. live and let live.
and plus, maybe it's a marketing stragegy.. if one is out, maybe you'll keep coming until you finally get all of them at once? no? haha.

I meant when an esnemble member is out or on for a different part, an adult goes into the ensemble. It would be nice to see teen swings go on.

^Yes, but people are already noting how much younger Robi and Gerard look than the rest of the cast. (And Robi is 20.) I think that would be the case with any real-life teen (well, at least the males).
gymdude were you onstage sunday night?

dramaqueen, no, why do you ask?? I won't be there again until the 21st.

By teen I mean the young cast members.

jg4892, oh I'm sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, that would be good. I imagine it's a little odd to have an adult fill in in the ensemble/chairs, where there are usually only the young folks.

It's especially odd when there are only 3 chorus members instead of 4!
My initial reaction to this was that the OP has never had to deal with being ill while performing in a musical (if they perform at all). It's not fun.
gymdude,
oh okay. because across the stage from me was this huge guy.. by huge i meant huge muscles in this weird top that was unbuttoned to his waist show his chest. he looked like a meatishead. that isn't meant to be insulting, i'm glad it wasn't you! he was kind of creepy. hahahaha.

Yes, he WAS very creepy, and he's been there many times, in various states of shirt "undress"- so glad I wasn't next to him!
