He's wrong about the Peter Pan thing. The RNT did a production with Ian McKellen (sp?) as Hook, and a male as Peter. B.D. Wong did it at the MUNY several years prior as well.

Lots of men have played Peter Pan - B.D. Wong and the very old Robert Johansson at Paper Mill. In my opinion, however, casting a grown man as Peter Pan never works - especially in the Charlap/Styne musical version. Any male over about the age of 10 just sounds like a big girl singing "I've Gotta Crow."

I agree that it's weird with a dude, but I've never been able to accept a menopausal woman as Peter, either. That Mary Martin version gives me the creeps.

Thats why Sandy Duncan was perfect when she played the role in the 70s while she was in her 20s.

I've seen young men in the role of Peter Pan twice at the Children's Theatre Company, and it hasn't worked, but when Cathy Rigby did it, the show was dazzling.

I directed an environmental theatre approach to the show and had two young girls as Peter and my Mrs. Darling became Captain Hook. It was a lot of fun, and my Hook was scary. I also had a little girl as Tinkerbell, and at one performance, a little girl reached out to touch her. That made the show entirely worth it.

It's a shocker they're doing Les Miz. By Muny standards, that's current.

Faith Prince as Dolly (if true) is wonderful casting.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I've seen a guy do the Charlap/Styne version once, and he actually was very convincing. You just need someone REALLY youthful to do it to avoid the creepy factor.

That said, it is one of my dream parts.

Well, someone has to keep up with Sacramento Music Circus, Pioneer Theatre Company, and that dinner theatre in Tennessee. re: St. Louis MUNY casting rumors

Going to the Muny is like going to a ball game, complete with rising for the National Anthem before it starts. I know it's beloved by many a St Louisan, but during my time there I thought it was just a terrible place to see theatre.

i love the d-vo.

petter pan, when done properly and well, as jm barrie intended the show to be done, works wonderfully with a male peter. the reason why it is very hard to do the martin/rigby version of pan with a male is because the songs were composed specifically for mary martin..

"...works wonderfully with a male peter" -- okay, call me a 5th grader - this syntex made me laugh out loud. Too bad Ethel Merman never played the part - she at least had huge balls.

I didn't realize Sandy Duncan was in her 20s when she played the role. My parents took me for my 16th birthday and I had my picture taken with her.

The only time I've seen a male Peter Pan was in Jerome Robbins Broadway when a guy played the role in that sequence in Charlotte D'Amboise's absence.

Pater Pan was played by Robert Johanssen when the Papermill did the musical a few years back. He was remarkable in the role and (how many times have we heard this?) is was rumored to transfer to Broadway.
