I've always wanted to go to a performing arts camp...but now I'm twenty and it's too late. re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: Stagedoor Manor?

I went to performing arts day camp for a few years but it was a joke. I would be so scared of going to a camp like that- it must be intimidating to be around so many people who go to performing arts schools year round and all.

Hi, I've been to Stagedoor for two summers and am returning one last time this year! I absolutely love it: especially that every person gets in a show. For the most part, the directors are INCREDIBLE They have classes ranging from voice to audition to stage combat to makeup! We have workshops like the one mentioned about Grigsby, last year Jeannine Tesori came and did a similar one. The atmosphere's really professional, but very friendly. At first I was worried I wouldn't be that goood, but there are peoples of all levels at Stagedoor. Plus, it's SO easy to meet people. Maybe I'll see you this summer!

I go to a performing arts school and French Woods. I love it. I don't know what life would be like without both-I can't even imagine it.

Ok,

So I went to Stagedoor for 7 summers. They were all quite amazing. To give you a quick rundown of what shows I got to do, I played the Pharoah Joseph...Dreamcoat, the Purser in Anything Goes, Dauntless in Once Upon A Mattress, Brockhurst in The Boyfriend, Ensemble in The Will Rogers Follies, Abner Dillon in 42nd Street, Ensemble in Side By Side By Sondheim, Steven Kodaly in She Loves Me, the Father in The Dining Room, the Balladeer in Assassins, Ugly in Honk, Cinderellas Prince in Into The Woods, and the main 8 characters in Little Me. So as you can see, you get a nice range of small and big parts. The shows are for the most part immaculatly directed. There used to be something called the Our Time Cabaret that toured the local Catskill resorts, but as of this year been cancelled so I hear. In its place is a Musical Theatre master class. The staff are all quite amazing and really seem to care about the work. All the sessions are 3 weeks, and infact you only really have 2 weeks of rehearsals. The stress is high and so are the stakes, however, if it is what you want to go into, its quite the training program. Even now, in my professional carrer, I dedicate it all to Stagedoor. Quite amazing. The downfall is in the price. It does get quite expensive. And yes CAMP, the movie is based on our camp and was actually shot there. However, there are no full bands for the show, and there are more straight boys than one would think. You also do get great special guests every summer. In 2002, Jeanane Tesori came to work with the cast of Violet. That summer Julia Murney also came to chat and sing.

Some alumni from Stagedoor include Robert Downey Jr, Mary Stuart Masterson, Julia Murney, Mandy Moore, Zach Braff, and the list goes on. Check out www.stagedoormanor.com

I cant speak for French Woods, nor should I. I do however know many people who have gone there and have had just a wonerful time. Same for interlochen.

this doesn't have much to do with the main message, but I remember seeing you rehearse! I was in the cast of Good Woman of Setzuan and Autumn let us have a little time off and watch you guys in one of your final dresses-you, and the show we saw, seemed amazing!

For stagedoor, (which IS better than French Woods), you can go to www.stagedoormanor.com there's a lot of information there. Unfortunatly, Stagedoor fills up very fast, and I'm sure that French Woods does too. I know that SDM was filled a couple of months ago, so you'll have to check it out for NEXT summer.

The ame goes for French Woods. It fills up extremely fast and was filled many months ago. Check it out for next year, even visit during this summer for a tour of the camp(you can call ahead). The sites are:

and the one the campers go to(you can see productions from the camp here)

Hi dramaqueen and BroadwayKate,
And whoever is wondering about Performing arts camps, I went to Long Lake as well. When did you two go? Maybe you know me or my sister. I was there from 1990-1996 and my younger sister was there 1993-2000. (Use a private message if you don't want to give out your name.)
For someone who wants a great all around arts experience, and not sooo intensely into theater, Long Lake is an amazing summer. It's not about really intense competition, but it's more easygoing, and I must say the productions are really amazing. Going there, you meet lots of people, plenty who aren't even into theater and I found it fun for the focus not to only be on the plays and musicals. When I went, there were several campers from performing arts schools, but many from public and private schools as well.
Although not as widely known for celebrities or famous alumni, at Long Lake Susan Stroman came to see a performance of World Goes Round, and the children of the following people attended: Schoenberg (forgot first name, French writer of Les Miz), Vanessa Williams, and Bruce Willis/Demi Moore. The singer Patti Rothberg (not Broadway) went there and was a counselor when I attended. A bunch of the younger campers who were there had performed on Broadway in Les Miz and A Xmas Carol. It's a small camp, so you really get to know friends and castmates well. Plus they do productions of many unique shows such as Robber Bridegroom, Children of Eden, and many more since I left.

Even as an adult who does not work in the world of theater, Long Lake was the most memorable experience I've had.

Now how expensive is Long Lake? Because I don't haev a ton of money at my fingertips, and it seems like all of the theater camps are sooo expensive!

Dear brdwaybaby17,
As for the price of Long Lake, it's not cheap. I would suggest comparing the cost to the other camps. I have no idea how much any of the 3 cost per session, but to check at LLC's rate, you can go to longlakecamp.com. It's undoubtedly full for most of this summer's slots, I'm sure. However, similar to at least one of the other camps, the sessions are 3, 6, or 9 weeks and the cheapest one at Long Lake is the last 3 weeks- which starts approximately the first Sun of August on. There are usually more spots for guys available last minute than for girls. (Age is 10-16 btw) Also, don't forget to include transportation costs if you're coming from far away. Long Lake is in the Adirondacks of NY State, and they have a chartered bus from a few spots in NY and NJ. If all 3 camps are too expensive, there is another you can check out which (in its program) seems similar to Long Lake, called Ballibay in the Poconos of PA. I don't know anyone who went there but I've read info about it and you may want to check it out. I think they also have a cheaper, shorter 2 week session at the end of the summer. You can also do a search on a website for camp pages by topic, like "performing arts" or "theater" to find more options that suit your budget. Hope this was helpful!

Nif, I am already going to a theater camp this summer, I was just preparing for next summer, since I really won't have anything left that I want to do at the camp I attend. But, I will be too old next summer anyway, seeing as I will be 17... I know, I'm a dork, I still attend camp, I just need to learn, learn, learn! I started late...

First of all Frenchwoods is the best place on earth! jesseeinstein is 100% correct! I mean when Jason Robert Brown came it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO awesome, and then when i went to NYC to see Man of La Mancha with FWF and during the interview session it turns out some of them went to FWF or had kids going there! I mean one of my friends parents were the producers of little shop on broadway now, and so much more, its so much to say, i mean i could talk about FWF forever, thats why its 9 weeks for me this summer!
