I went to Beauty and the Beast a few days ago and there were standing ovations after Be Our Guest and Gaston. It's been soooo long since I have seen a standing ovation during a show! Dose this happen frequently at B & B?
Those numbers do not deserve standing ovations. Victoria Clark singing Dividing Day or Christine Ebersole singing The Revolutionary Costume are two numbers that do, however. (And that have unfortunately never gotten them durring performances I've been to.) It's sad that audiences ovated the two numbers. Your audience probably consisted of tourists who were impressed by the show-offish dance steps and scenery.

When I saw BATB in July, those songs got standing ovations too! Be Our Guest deserved it!!
Those numbers in BATB IMO have very complex choreography and timing. Those actors are working very hard in my opinion and dealing with props, hydraulics and other special effects all the while singing and dancing. Again, IMO, those folks deserve a standing ovation. They work just as hard as any other actor on Broadway. Don't discredit their blood, sweat, and tears just because it is a Disney show.
People stood after "Hello 12, Hello 13, Hello Love" the other night in "A Chorus Line!"
Unless you were at that same show and saw those numbers performed, you can't really say they didn't deserve standing ovations.
That's just foolish.

when I saw DRS with the OBC back in October 05 there were standing ovations after Great Big Stuff, Love Is My Legs (sort of... like only front orchestra), The Reckoning, The Dirty Rotten Number, and the Finale....
it was a dumb audience and a group in the front row was just a little overzealous
I've seen Light in the Piazza twice and never felt the need to give a standing ovation after Dividing Day. Be Our Guest is a different story.
I stood once after Dirty Rotten Number. It was John Lithgow's last day (the 2, not 7) and the audience was clapping for like 2 min, so my dad and I stood up. Everyone around us did the same thing a few seconds later, lol.

God forbid someone be having an incredible time and get so lost in it that they stand up here and there because they are loving their evening of theatre and the music.
Maybe they were just dumb. Who knows.

I didn't expect much from the show but it was great! Gaston really did deserve the ovation! (then again so did Be Our Guest) I loved that cup dance they do in Gaston!
Off-topic: Why do people say Steve is so bad as the Beast? I thought he did a good job! I was expecting him to be awful but I found him hilarious!
i agree, stalker...i think steve blanchard is a very passionate beast (although he isn't as scary in the beginning as i would hope). i don't know why people think otherwise...
anyway, i was at BATB on friday night and be our guest got a standing ovation. gaston didn't, although it did deserve it - i have been in shows that required such hand-eye coordination and rhythm, as in the cup clanking section, and it's SO tough to keep your energy and rhythm. so yes, gaston did deserve a standing o

hmmm... i really don't think the character of the Beast is supposed to be hilarious... yeah sure he has his funny moments, but he's really not supposed to be a hilarious character...
i think the comedy of his character adds to his likability as the show goes on it makes him more human. at least in my opinion...

Well, what I meant was he handled the comedy bits so well! When she says "Why won't you stop acting like a child?" He kinda pouts and jumps up and down and says "'Cause I want you to come down!" I thought that was funny!
Steve as the Beast - the problem, IMO, is WHEN he uses the comedy. The first moment during the fight in Belle's room just doesn't work. Granted, I'm a sucker, and I laugh every time cause you really don't know how overboard he's going to go. But storywise, it doesn't work. Later on, when he's starting to show more humanity, and that he really starts to like Belle, when he's never had these feelings before, it works. Bring on the comedy. But at that moment in the room during Act I, again JMO, it doesn't work right.
Back on topic, go "Gaston"! And for an object enthusiast like me, GO "BOG!!!" So glad they got the ovations they deserve.
I think that Steve Blanchard is an amazing Beast. He conveys such sadness & longing, wonder & love... He is an outstanding performer with a powerfully moving voice. I've seen him in BatB (w/ Ashley Brown, Peter Flynn, & Jeff Brooks who were all also wonderful!). I've also seen other performers as Beast & to me, no one holds a candle to Steve.
Sometimes I think they do...I am not sure in the middle of Beauty and the Beast if they do...at the end yes. There is a clip of LaChanze on the forbidden site from the once on this island concert...they give her a standing o...but she deserved that

I totally stood up after every number in B&tB. What, are we just supposed to be old statues and not enjoy oursleves during a show!?!
I would think that those two numbers do deserve a standing ovation, but When I went they didn't have one for either (I was 4, so its possible that it did). I thought it was pretty cool though when I saw Boy From Oz, everyone standed up after Once Before I Go. I started laughing a bit because we were standing so long. And it was he number before the finale too.
How about all the picture taking during BatB.
Along with the numerous standing ovations, I have never seen so many people taking pictures.
Constant flashes before the show of the curtain, and then during ever number, a flash from numerous seats.
