buffy, you should think about getting other instrumental lessons. I only started singing a couple of months ago, but having piano, violin, and guitar behind me really helped me to read music and since I have a good general pitch of A440, it really helped me catch up to the level other people that have been singing for many years have.
You might think it's too late, but definitely think about getting piano lessons. Here's a solfege site, as well.

What are the different studios one can apply to/attend at Tisch, and what's the difference between them all?
Thanks Aigoo, that's a good idea. I've been singing for a long time, and everyone always thinks I can read music and then give me a "shame on you" look when they find out I can't. I figured it was probably time I learned as I know it's terribly helpful.

unsanelily - the primary studios at tisch that freshman can apply are:
cap 21 (musical theater)
lee strasberg (strasberg method, sense memory)
playwrights horizons (acting/directing/design)
stella adler (adler method .. honestly i don't really know what adler's method was famous for)
atlantic (mamet's method, practical aesthetics)
experimental theater wing (grotowski method, movement based)
meisner (meisner method, repetition)
technical production track (design)

Just a clarification here re: Tisch and studios. You do not apply to the actual studios, you apply to NYU/Tisch. At your artistic review/audition, you may specify your first choice for a studio but there's no guarantee that you will get it. The auditors make the determination where you will be placed should you be accepted to NYU.
I couldn't get through all of the responses without getting upset, so let me clarify something about Steinhardt. IT IS EXTREMELY ACTING INTENSIVE. Yes it is a vocal performance program, however, Not only do you have acting class, you also have acting class in song, and musical theatre scene study. These people can sing and act! Well. It does lack in the dancing focus, but hello(!) they did A Chorus Line last year!
Both programs are good. You'll be happy at either. But make sure you spend some time visiting each school because you'll get the vibes of each and figure out where you'll be happiest.

kateerin- can I pm you? I would love to ask you some questions.
Didn't go to Tisch. Didn't go to Cap21. Have spent 4 years in the city, constantly auditioning/working with graduates of both programs.
Steinhardt is having MUCH more success in the theatre world right now than Tisch. Steinhardt is just as competitive now, if not moreso, than Tisch's Cap21 (can't speak for the non-Cap programs at Tisch). At any given moment, there are several working Steinhardt grads on Broadway (I can think of about 4 off the top of my head, and can think of about the same number of Cap students).
The real reason Steinhardt offers a BM and not a BFA is kind of technical, mostly: a university college can't offer the exact same degree as another college. It would be the equivalent of having two BA in English programs (one would have to offer a literature degree or creative writing or...you get the picture).
That said, focus on the one whose training seems to suit you most. Steinhardt does have the edge in the singing department. Tisch would be slightly more on the acting program.
But I agree with some of the people here: Steinhardt's productions are INCREDIBLY more satisfying than Tisch's.
