Besides them talking about her in WICKED while Idina is on the screen (oops?!) this is nice little plug for PQ!

It doesn't seem like the clip starts from the beginning. I wonder how much of it is missing.

Wow. Stephanie is bad on camera. She just babbled on and on about the entire team and their resumes and their passion and blah blah blah... Let the woman ask some questions, Steph!

bump

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Intense? How? Because the general sentiment wasn't, "Stephanie J. Block is a goddess of everything"? It was a crappy tv interview, that's all I'm saying. She basically did a monologue.

I have to agree with tobiasragg on this one. People have been critical of THE PIRATE QUEEN and I can respect that but attacking her television interview just makes no sense. Fosterchild- Who would you have prefered play Grace...Hunter or Sutton? I mean come on...she gives a beautiful interview. The newscaster certainly asked questions and Stephanie gave well thought out answers. I'd rather get as much info as I can than hear one word answers! I don't see anybody on here stating "Stephanie is the goddess of everything." But MANY people respect her and her amazing talent. I'd venture to say that if Sutton was interviewed and said the exact same thing you would have LOVED it.

FosterChild - what, in your opinion, makes for a good interview? And what is your opinion based on?

Mine are based on having worked on several talk shows and seeing what works and what doesn't. For me, it's a few things. Of course the interviewer and the topic/questions are important, but the INTERVIEWEE can still come off well regardless if they are personable, articulate, come across as genuine, and actually TALK! You'd be surprised how hard it is to get guests to give more than one word answers sometimes!

For me the interview was fine. It answered the basic who, what, where, and when questions. Content wise it served it's purpose as it was just to plug the show. Production wise, it would've been better to have a clip of Stephanie as Elphaba or to not show a clip at all. That was just sloppy work on whoever made that decision (or didn't realize it wasn't her).

And at risk of sounding defensive, she "just babbled on and on about the entire team and their resumes" because 1) she's creating credibility to the show, and 2) She was ASKED as her questions to discuss the team behind the show and the producers.

I never meant for this to be a discussion about interviews, but since you've made it into one I'll agree that interviewing well is a skill. I'm curious to know your thoughts about WHY this one didn't work for you other than just saying "it was crappy".

It was a good interview, I think it was a great promo for the show and Steph comes across wonderfully! I liked having her talk about the show and production over all the clips and rehearsal footage, it was better than being distracted by a bunch of questions and short answers.

And if Popular is a big Stephanie fan, what does it matter to any of you who are attacking her? She has been incredibly supportive and has done a great job of publicizing Stephanie's appearances and shows. Every performer should be so lucky as to have such a dedicated following and supportive fan base.

Wow...I have to say (and this is directed more generally at the boards than at FosterChild), it seems to me that some people on BWW.com find their life's purpose in flaming...actors, shows, posters, it doesn't seem to matter. Having read this (for now) brief thread, it doesn't seem to me that Popular comes across as worshipping Stephanie J. Block, just responding quite positively--and courteously, I might add--to a negative reviewer. Where did she say "Hands off the J. Block" or "how dare you run Steph down? She is the Best Ever! EVER!"? She didn't (that part WAS directed at FosterChild).

I guess it's only all right to be enthusiastic and supportive of Sutton Foster and Christine Ebersole these days (generally directed again!).

My own opinion, as a teacher of communications classes, including debate (I'm qualifying myself here as a novice in theatre but a bit more than a novice at public speaking), is that Ms. Block comes across as enthusiastic and articulate--two qualities that make for not only a good interviewee but a good representative for a Broadway show. In fact, given the production mistakes (showing the wrong cast from "One Short Day" when there are numerous clips of Block available from the press reels of WICKED, looping the same audio and, at times, video from PQ when there are also other, good bits they could have shown instead), it was the interaction between interviewer and interviewee that made this clip watchable...which is as it should be. She was asked about the pedigree of the production and she gave it--and was clearly pleased and honored to be working with these people. I venture to say that, had she not, some of the people on these boards would say she was arrogantly promoting herself and taking whatever credit is due for a big show at this stage of production (and I'm certain someone will snipe that, for PQ, that's not much). As it was, she barely spoke about herself at all, though there was a lot she could say. I do find myself wishing that they had spent a bit less time on WICKED and asked her more questions about the new show instead.

Well. Now that I've carefully (over)qualified all my statements, since I didn't want anything to be misconstrued or twisted so that it could be used to misconstrue, I'm off to await the flaming that will no doubt soon center on me, despite my attempt to be fairhanded, non-inflammatory, and mature. I'm sorry for the negativity toward the board; I just feel that it could be such a powerful resource, but there's so much free-floating bitterness and vitriol that it's not exactly a fun place to visit (and that again is a general statement, and not directed at FosterChild).

Have seen Steph in Boy From Oz (28 times, lol) and in concert at Birdland twice. Missed her as Ephalba (had Philly tickets but she dropped out of tour before then). Excellent talent, and am definitely looking forward to seeing her in this role!

I wouldn't say that she was babbling or not letting the interviewer speak. It wasn't like she was cutting her off.
I seems like a fine interview to me...except of course for the aforementioned Wicked clip mix up.

But how quickly an offhand comment turns personal for so many people. Chill.

Can I just say that I love that woman? Because I do. I love Stephanie J. Block. And I think she gave a DAMN good interview :)
