I can't imagine them doing that, let alone in a way that was an attempt to shame Kate.

I love a good conspiracy theory as much as any one, but this is not a good one. Sometimes I wonder if there are really this many dumb people on earth. (Don't answer that!)

Does it add anything to the story?
It definitely adds context. They act as presenters and you can interpret the SWM in the play as specimens for observation.
