"Hutt, who was born in Toronto, earned his reputation as one of the world's most respected classical actors while performing in Canada, primarily at the Stratford Shakespeare festival.
He joined the festival during its inaugural season in 1953 and trod its boards until 2005, when, at 85, he declared himself too forgetful to learn his lines.
In his years on the stage, he assumed most of the great roles of classical theatre, giving unforgettable performances as King Lear and Prospero, two of Shakespeare's most powerful characters."
He will be greatly missed.

This is the fellow who, in Season III of "Slings and Arrows," played a dying actor who lived just long enough to do Lear... amazing... I actually saw him at Stratford in several productions in the mid 1990s. A true giant of the theatre.

Ah, that's too bad. I figured this was coming when he bowed out of whatever show he was to do this season.
Check out his production of Long Day's Journey into Night. Worth a watch.
He, and his multiple 'comebacks,' will be truly missed.
Each night after he took his final bow in thr 2005 production of THE TEMPEST he would wave farewell to the audience with a smile and slight twinkle in his eye that hinted "I'll be back." He almsot was. Richard Moneette (Artistic Director) is retiring this year and it was decided Hutt would appear in A DELICATE BALANCE but a few months ago it was announced that he was not well enough to play the role.
It's hard to say goodbye.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

He was a giant in the theatre in so many ways ... and great proof that some of the best theatre in the world happens outside of NYC!
He was heartbreaking in that episode of S&A.
I'm so sorry to hear about this loss. I can't say I was familiar with his work but I'm sorry to hear of his passing nontheless.
A very sad day for the Stratford Festival and Canadian theatre.
Damn damn damn.
We all knew it was coming, but damn anyway.
SAw him many times. The man never gave a bad performance.
