In a word, yes. It is a great movie. Of course this is another one of those projects that are so often linked to Babs that never sees the light of day. But you should get All About Eve.

Wow. So does this mean a revival of "Applause", or a new show?

Rob, the movie is a classic... *definitely* pick it up.

Thanks guys, that's enough of an endorsement for me. It's on the way from Amazon. I'm taking a few days off from work (well, the day job at least) later in the week so it's going on the relaxing time movie list. If the movie doesn't happen, I'll at least have broadened my horizons. re: re: Streisand 'All About Eve' Rumor...

ALL ABOUT EVE is one of the smartest movies of that era. I think it was pretty daring of Hollywood to do such a true (sorta...) story about the machinations of working in the theatre. You know, back then everything was all sweetness and light in film -- about EVERYTHING, for the most part.

In that article Rob linked to, it says that Jessica Simpson is the front runner for "Eve Harrington". Well, my. Voiceanth, I can't WAIT to hear your thoughts on THAT one. :)

re: re: re: re: Streisand 'All About Eve' Rumor...

All About Eve is my favorite film. Period. Enough said.

Why anyone would want to remake a classic film like All About Eve is beyond comprehension. Risking comparisions to a great sophisticated film comedy is simply asking for it.

Have any remakes of classics worked?

For instance:
Born Yesterday?
Stagecoach?
How many carcasses of Wuthering Heights are there?
And don't anyone dare mention A Star Is Born.
I am dreading the new Manchurian Candidate that is currently filming, Meryl Streep or no.

The best remakes seem to have been flawed the first time around.

And RobD, not being familiar with All About Eve and being even remotely connected with the theatre is like calling yourself a born again Christian and being unfamiliar with the Bible. Seriously.

Buuuuuuuut, Rob's straight, so he gets dispensation.

I have to admit I never saw All About Eve until I was almost 30! It's hard to see every must-see in a timely manner.

re: Streisand 'All About Eve' Rumor...

This is all so very strange.

1. First off, RobD, I am stunned you have never seen ALL ABOUT EVE. It is a thrilling, great film and a must see for anyone with a love of theater.

2. This was mentioned by Streisand on Oprah. She briefly mentioned interest in a remake of ALL ABOUT EVE, making Margo Channing a Broadway musical star as opposed to just a Broadway star.

3. It was intereting that neither Streisand or Oprah mentioned APPLAUSE. APPLAUSE is the Tony winning best musical, based on ALL ABOUT EVE, that won Lauren Bacall her first Tony as Margo Channing.

4. Lauren Bacall was directed to an Oscar nomination by Streisand in The Mirror Has Two Faces. Did Betty Bacall and Barbra talk about playing Margo at that time? One wonders if this flamed Streisand's interest in this project.

5. There would need to be some changes made. At the very heart of the story is forty year old Margo's life being taken over by 25ish year old Eve. Either Streisand would need to play younger, or it would need to be altered a bit. It clearly changes the dramatic landscape of the piece to have a conniving young woman take away the career and lover of a woman who is 60ish as opposed to a woman who is 40ish.

6. Whatever happens with this project, if anything happens, it will be fascinating to see.

say it ain't so

Have to agree with WOSQ. ALL ABOUT EVE is, like CASABLANCA, a classic-classic. It's not that the story can't be borrowed, updated or revamped (it has been used in every soap opera on TV). But the Bette Davis-Margo Channing marriage of actor and role is unique in film. Just to see a still from the film is a reminder of the iconic nature of the character, as fully inhabited by Davis. Back in the 80s, I believe Jane Fonda wanted to remake it, too. She strikes me as temperamentally more appropriate than Streisand. But she let the option drop. I can only imagine any reading of a script that includes the classic lines. You can't "hear" it without hearing Davis.

As for APPLAUSE, it fashioned the material around the personality of BACALL, and the show never worked as well without her (though I saw Anne Baxter, who was fun and ironic, having played Eve in the film.)

If Streisand remakes it, I'd assume she'd be wise enough to start with only the roughtest outline of the premise. The idea of Streisand literally calling herself "Margo Channing" strikes me as fairly ludicrous. Maybe it'll be set in the music world, and it'll have a Madonna/Britney feel. But with Streisand at 60, the music would be pop, so the "eve" character would be some kind of anachronism.

The bigger issue here is: why remake? Just like the ongoing debate at this site about revivals and movies going to stage. Hollywood and Broadway are both afraid to try untested material. It's sad that so few people dare to invest in something brand new.

re: say it ain't so

It won't work for Barbra for one simple reason. ALL ABOUT EVE is an ensemble piece with lots of great character parts. And there is not a chance she will play ANYTHING but "THE STAR". And I don't see her willing to risk the possibility than another member of the cast might well steal the film away from her.

This is also the REAL reason she passed on starring in the long-delayed television MAME. She wasn't about to confront Vera Charles.

BS, interviewed in last week's TV GUIDE: "I'd be interested in making another musical. If only I could sit down with people who want to do things with me. I keep pushing them off. I turned down the Renee Zellweger part in 'Chicago' [in 1996]. At that time, I just didn't want to work."

THESE ARE HER TO MINDSETS...I DON'T WANT TO WORK or NO ONE WANTS TO WORK WITH ME....

This project will go nowhere..just like the countless others that have gone nowhere!

re: say it ain't so

Oh, of course ALL ABOUT EVE is one of the best from Hollywood. However, how many films/shows have we all seen after the hype, after everyone has told us it is the best film/show ever made only to finally see it for ourselves and think, "Huh, it was pretty good, but why all the fuss?"

Rob, I hope to the Lordy that you find as much enjoyment in AAE as those who saw it "fresh", but do not feel bad if you don't care for it, either. If nothing else, the clothes are flawless! (not that you care a wit about such things.)
PEACE.

OT: Wasn't she gonna produce MAME with Cher?

It's slightly OT, but I thought she was gonna direct MAME, with Cher (not a bad idea, still, no? How about Megan Mullally as Vera?)

I still try to picture her in CHICAGO and have to giggle. I love Streisand, but Roxie Hart?!

My feeling: this woman is still in extraordinary voice. Why can't she find/develop/create a new property with one of our best composers?? We need new shows, new scores, new songs for her to sing. There's nothing quite as depressing as realizing our biggest musical comedy star doesn't do musical comedy anymore. Thoughts, others? Maybe her ALL ABOUT EVE project, with a new score (as relayed by TheaterTeacher above, thanks) would work. The irony is: she'd have to play a character like herself -- a Barbra Streisand who still performs on B'way.

Maybe I should have an open mind.

re: OT: Wasn't she gonna produce MAME with Cher?

The only thing that is definite about this remake of EVE is copious backlighting. Barbra is starring in it, so it's a natch. You ever notice the aura eminating off her head in MIRROR HAS TWO FACES? Ridiculous.

re: OT: Wasn't she gonna produce MAME with Cher?

Let me add that I do indeed hope that Streisand does not do a film version of Applause. A newly written musical of All About Eve would be divine, but Applause reached its heights from Lauren Bacalls's performance and really wasn't very good.

Applause has an ironically excellent overture but a truly weak score. It was one of the first shows I ever saw and I was blown away by the level of excitement Bacall created. As a kid I listened to the album tirelessly, but I have realized for a long time how disappointing the score is. I have often thought, this score was written by the same people who wrote Bye, Bye, Birdie? Ugh, they could have done better.

re: re: OT: Wasn't she gonna produce MAME with Cher?

Auggie, originally ABC wanted Barbra to appear as MAME and tempted her with the idea of Brolin as Beuregard. After hemming & hawing for an eternity, she then said she wants to 'direct' it. An yes, I know the Cher casting etc. but I think this is a dead TV project for now.

Kids, the sad thing is - Barbra JUST DOES NOT CARE THAT MUCH anymore. She has no NEED to record or perform. She only does it keep her finger in the pie and to keep the Stickley fund flush.

re: re: re: OT: Wasn't she gonna produce MAME with Cher?

Let's see:
Barbra Streisand and Jessica Simpson in a movie together!?
Oh the agony induced by that simple thought. Barbra is a very intelligent woman (hell, she listen's to books on tape for hours during her driving excursions), and she buys and sells stocks on the internet as a hobby.
Jessica Simpson is probably one of the dumbest human beings to ever walk the planet. Barbra would go insane.....and the Enquirer has just made another million!

re: Streisand 'All About Eve' Rumor...

The mind boggles at the thought of it.
No one admires La Streisand more than I do but she is clearly 20 years too old for the part.
I have to believe that this is someone's idea of a joke....a very late April Fools Day joke at that.

Who would play Bill Sampson, Birdie, Karen etc?

Albin, who are you to question a man's homosexuality? Gay men are known for their excellent taste, yet those pictures you've posted indicate your wardrobe is more suitable for Rush Limaugh than for a stylilsh gay man.

Rob is of that new breed known as "metrosexuals".

re: re: re: re: Streisand 'All About Eve' Rumor...

I think I am one of the biggest Barbra fans in the world. Its kinda scary. Just a small bit of my collection:

over 40 cd's, EVERY original LP(thats alot):P, 12 Biographys, 9 movies, over 300 scrapbook pictures, 5 posters, magnets, 8 tracks from the 70's, The Concert T shirts ..... well you get the point :P

re: re: re: re: re: Streisand 'All About Eve' Rumor...

In 4 words...It will NEVER happen. Just sounds like more insane ranting's from La Streisand. I agree with TOT, it would NEVER make sense with Streisand at her current age.

Dof, why aren't I surprised that you have "never heard of this movie"?(rhetorical question) Besides, it goes against all of your sanctimonious *principles*. There's lot's of back-stabbing,evil machinations and extremely witty rapid-fire, banter. Although, you might identify a great deal with Celeste Holmes' character.
