Will Strictly Ballroom be coming to Broadway in the near future? It was quite successful in Australia.

Strictly Ballroom

The set looks great, especially the enormous disco ball

After seeing the show back in May, i can say that it is spectacular however, it may have a similar fate as Priscilla if it makes it's way to Broadway. Baz is a great director but when it truly comes down to it, we all want Moulin Rouge on stage before this!

Speak for yourself. That film is so crazily edited (and effectively so) that it could never be replicated on stage properly unless they invested some serious money into the show.

that is completely true. the movie is edited crazily that it would be hard to be on stage but if they could get it right, it could be a spectacular [or a flop if not done right]

I will give Bazz props for his La Boheme, which is gorgeous and smart. This show originally kinda made him a star director in Ausralia, yeah? hrmmmm

I think the show has the potential to have crazy success here in the states. Perfect combination between spectacle, dance, and Broadway theater. And I could definitely see the role of Scott having stunt casting opportunities of needed. I feel like it'd be a great role for Jeremy Jordan. Annaleigh Ashford as Tina?

i believe it could go well on Broadway, i saw it in Sydney during previews and loved the stage direction and costumes. Singing was alright but i think Baz went for dancing skills before singing ability :p Yeah Jeremy jordan would make a great Scott! what about Fran?

Annaleigh Ashford could make a great Tina but i think Baz, if it came to Broadway, wants an Australian cast for some roles like Fran. When he casted her character, he went world wide searching, ironically it only brought him back home where he got an Australian actress :p

Believe lots of re-writes before the Melbourne opening.

yeah there is a few re-writes, the music itself isn't unbelievable but the stage direction is spectacular...expected of baz

I haven't seen it yet (it opens in Melbourne in January and I have tickets for early February), but I have heard mixed reviews. They are looking at making some changes to the show before opening in Melbourne and were doing some feedback sessions with audience members.

Interesting that people are talking about stunt (or star) casting the show, when the Australian cast is the exact opposite. Both leads were in musicals as kids and the young man playing Scott was in a kids'/teens' TV show, but otherwise they were both VERY green. There are some good theatre names in the rest of the cast, but unfortunately in Australia that really doesn't carry much weight.

^ i hope you enjoy it! yes there was some changes to the score that needed to be made and i myself really liked the actress who played Fran although I would have liked to see more of her dancing ability. the entire cast is great and it's good that baz has chosen such unknown leads [even though Scott was in a tv show but unknown to the theatre anyway]

Scott needs to be a professional dancer above any other talent, I would think.

I feel like it'd be a great role for Jeremy Jordan.

I don't think so at all.

Annaleigh Ashford as Tina?

Do you mean Liz? Tina Sparkle is a very small role and only really appears in the last act with only a couple of lines. I could definitely see Ashford as Liz, though. Incidentally, the original Tina Sparkle, Sonia Kruger, is the host of Big Brother Australia (by newest obsession).

Miriam Shor as Scott's mother! Or for more authenticity, Jane Turner!

"I feel like it'd be a great role for Jeremy Jordan."

Jeremy Jordan? Really? But, he can't dance. Scott is a professional dancer in the film and should be on stage. Annaleigh would make a perfect Liz.

I vote for Kiril Kulish, and no, I am NOT Kiril! He has been dancing ballroom for almost 15 years.

* Oops I meant Annaleigh would be great for Liz, NOT Tina. My mistake! As for Jeremy, I just figured a Broadway name would have to play Scott, not a professional dancer. Out of everyone I thought of off the top of my head that could sing well and read young enough, Jeremy came to mind.

she's the main female character...she can't dance in the beginning and becomes Scott's partner
