Jacques Brel was astounding. I lost count of how many times my eyes watered during the performance. The entire company is stellar and it is excellent to hear Drew Sarich singing English lyrics that lend themself to his talent.
The Color Purple was phenomenal. I knew LaChanze was out for 2 weeks, so I was eager to see Kenita R. Miller as Celie (having loved her performance at Bryant Park). She was absolutely darling and I'm willing to bet she'll step into the leading lady's shoes when LaChanze takes her final bow. She was so cute and had the biggest toothy grin, I wanted to put her in my pocket and take her home with me. The show was explosive, as was the audience, and I found myself perking in my seat each time the delicious Church Lady trio came out. Whoodadaddy?
Rush tickets for Bridge and Tunnel were sold out when I tried to get them (the snooty rude box office teller claimed they were out at 10AM, liar). Instead, I returned to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre to grab seats for Sweeney Todd, my true love, and had a magnificent time. It was even better the second time around, and the cast couldn't have asked for a better audience (sans final performance crowds, etc). Plus, it was Patti LuPone's last show before her break for the Ravinia Festival, so everyone was spot on. And I met John Doyle at the Stage Door, along with the entire cast (LuPone took her time, signing, chatting, and taking photos with everyone). There were 4 waves of standing ovation and I left the theatre shaking.
