Does Roundabout own it?
Why hasn't anything played there in so long?
And why is Studio 54 so frequently dark? It's a decent theater....Roundabout could have SOMETHING there until 110 in the Shade.

I believe yankee was asking about the performance space upstairs. Which to the best of my knowledge is still set up as a night club (tables) If I remember correctly the area is large but with the table format it didn’t allow for much seating. Its a very gloomy place, much like Studio 54 with a narrow poorly lit stair case leading up to it. With a lot of work, it would make a nice off broadway theatre. According to the Lortel Archives only 2 shows have played there, Newsical and Listen to my Heart. Other than that it has been used for concerts. I believe the box office is at street level right before you enter the frosted doors to Studio 54.
According to Wikipedia:
"The second floor of the theater is still used as a nightclub on weeks when plays are not being staged; when it does so it operates under the name Upstairs at Studio 54. In recent years, singers such as Gloria Estefan have performed there as a tour stop. There have also been huge, and very popular, "disco parties" held there. The most notable of these well attended nights were held in 2004 and 2005.”
Hope that helps.

Doesn't Studio 54 have bad sound quality?
I know the system for Threepenny was terrible.

The seating at Studio 54 is notoriously uncomfortable.
But the upstairs part, is that the one you can rent through the Roundabout for parties, etc.?

Unfortunately I have to say, I just hate the theatre. I was so excited my first time at the theatre about being there but the second I got there I was so unhappy. First off, the marquee is so unoticable! Seriously, it's just a box! The sound is terrible. Seats are uncomfortable. AND...when I went to see Threepenny, I had to sit in the mezzanine. There is a huge freaking bar in the way! I can't even see some parts of the stage. I had to place my head in between the two poles of the railing just so I could get a good view...which adds to the uncomfortable position.
Just bad memories of the theatre, which is unfortunate because I wanted to like it so much.

I still love that theatre. I had some weird fun up there when it was still a club...which is not appropriate for this board.
The "other" space that started this thread, I have no answer for. I've seen shows/concerts there; yet can't tell you more. I'm not even sure if it was the old VIP room from the old club, because one just wouldn't remember what would have happened up there when you were up there.
I still always find it fun to be in the balcony of the main theatre, because I do remember what happened up there in those days... (which I will not talk about on this board.)
Shockingly, 3Penny, which was to bring back those haunting memories; just brought back nightmares.
Can't wait for 110 in the Shade (if it really will happen); it might bring in some odd sunshine to that great old space.

Posted: 9/11/06 at 2:38amI agree, it could be a lot nicer and hiper if only they would give it some attention. The marquee is just horrible. I wish people would take a lot more time on these things. The marquee is the one thing that gets the person seeing the show excited, if it's a let down, then you're sort of already bummed.
