My dad is a librarian at a small town branch. They have a children's program for ages 2-4 at the library every week. They always make nametags for the children at the beginning so those leading it can address the child by name. One woman came into the library with her 4-year-old daughter for the program. I should mention my dad has worked at this branch for upwards of 10 years and has seen this woman many times before, as well as various members of her family.
He asked the little girl her name to make the nametag. The woman dragged her daughter out of the section and he could see her gesturing angrily to the girl across the library. Then she stormed back over to my dad and yelled about how DARE he ask her daughter her name! They were trying to teach their daughter not to talk to strangers! She just kept ranting, as though my dad were some man on the street propositioning her child. My dad, who prides himself on being familiar with regular patrons, was horrified that anyone would suggest that he was a "stranger" shouldn't be addressing the child, especially since the woman bringing her daughter to leave at the program in his care. Why bring your child to the library program if you won't let her talk to the librarian?
The same woman came back to the library a few weeks later, wanted to buy a book from their used book cart. The book cost a dollar. She didn't have any cash on her and wanted to leave an IOU for it. She even had the gall to say to my dad "Oh, but you know me!"
