Another reason behind Avenue Q winning Best Musical is because the producers of that show announced a national tour, and the Tony voters probably recognized that Wicked was already gonna be a smash hit on the road, that it didn't really need the Tony at all, where Avenue Q needed the Tony more to stay alive. Shortly after Avenue Q won, it was revealed that there was no tour, they only made an exclusive deal with Las Vegas. Which irritated a lot of Tony voters.

Yes because I'm sure the majority of the 700+ voting membership thought about all of that. I can't wait to see you regurgitate this, either in this thread (word-for-word!) or in another, unsuspecting thread like you do with your other theories.

And Michael Reidel is so well-known for straight forward, honest reporting. Of course, as it turned out, Avenue Q did BOTH Vegas and a National Tour... so the tour voters got their show, anyway.
So tired of that theory...

The supposed "betrayal" by Avenue Q is all the more reason not to vote awards based on tour-appeal.
The very idea of it is shameful and taints the awards. If the award is supposed to be for "Best Profit Potential", they should just call it that.

Exactly and redo the award in the form of a huge $ 1000 bill
