Patti Lupone is appearing at the ENCORES bash on November 21-22.
One of the composers they are selecting to honor is Jules Styne, composer of GYPSY.
Now, I know that Arthur Laurents has made GYPSY off-limits to Patti for a while (various reports on why this is, don't know exactly why so don't ask me)...but...
It's one thing to ban her from a production.
But I don't think you can ban her from a SONG.
Like "Roses Turn", perhaps?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Apparently, Laurents can hold a grudge better than my mother.
Lupone was apparently suppose to appear in his play JOLSON SINGS AGAIN (I believe it was this piece) and had to pull out at the last minute. He blames her for it's inability to move forward.

Thanks, Matt, my boy!
It seems if Margo doesn't say it, it actually hasn't happened!
And this from someone who ADORES Margo!

I see... I had misread the thread... thanks.
But what power does he have in terms of the rights to material from Gypsy? Why could Ms. Lupone not perform the show in its entirety, but could possibly perform a single song?

Posted: 10/25/04 at 4:04pmAs one of the two living authors of GYPSY, he can withold the rights of production if he chooses. He and Sondheim also refused to let the Betty Buckley/Deborah Gibson production to come into NY.
