Just noticed that all of the Best Musical noms that are for both new and revival are split 2 from each.
Direction: Mephis/Fela and La Cage/Ragtime
Choreography: CFA/Fela and La Cage/PP
Orchestrations: Memphis/Fela and La Cage/PP
Scenic: Fela/AI and La Cage/Ragtime
Costume: Fela/Memphis and La Cage/Ragtime
Lighting: Fela/AI and La Cage/Ragtime
Sound: Fela/SOS and La Cage/Night Music
So...that's can't be a coincidence. I suspect they've imposed some sort of split which has meant that things like AI's orchestrations didn't get a nom, AI's choreo didn't get a nom, AF set and costumes didn't get a nom etc.
If there is such a split imposed on the committee then shouldn't they state it? Seems crappy to me.
Not sure if this is true of non-musicals. Haven't looked them over yet.....
If it is a conspiracy it's obviously because the Tony committee is
RACIST!
I'm sure it's a coincidence. But then again the nominating committee was smoking crack at their meetings this year so anything is possible.

I'm surprised there wasn't more talk about this. It really seems more than a coincidence to me. Hmmm...I should check last years noms. I think the committee has trouble evaluating things like the design categories and since they are mixed between revival and new, it wouldn't surprise me if there was some sort of direction for them to be balanced. I mean some of them don't make much sense if you know anything about design. Maybe I'm just a grassy knoll kind of person....
