I have an urgent request for you guys.
Does anyone know if the libretto/script/anything is available for the 1972 (or 3) musical, SUGAR, and where I could find it?
Or even just...a clip of it..or something? Something to prove the actual show exists?
It was based on the movie Some Like It Hot, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill?
I haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE, I and I really need it...it's not on the libretto website..it isn't even listed on IBDB.
Help?

Posted: 10/25/06 at 6:49pmDidn't it get re-named in the last few years? I seem to remember seeing it on tour w/Tony Bennett still doing it.

I think you mean Tony Roberts, husk.
But I'm sure people would pay big bucks to see Tony Bennett in drag.
Not a pretty picture, though, come to think of it.

You people amaze me at the lack of knowledge! It was a National tour of "Some Like It Hot" starring Tony Curtis! He starred in the old Joey Brown role. The website is still up even though the tour ended May 2004! Go to http://www.thehotmusical.info/jeff/SLIH/index.html to see it.
It was basically the same show as "Sugar". They called it "Sugar" because back then they couldn't get the rights to the "Some Like It Hot" name. But once Tony Curtis signed up for the tour it was OK to call it "SLIH".
Hope this helps!

You mean the cast album
It has been said that the only Jule Styne musical not recorded was the Red Shoes. I believe look To The Lillies was a Styne show not preserved. I saw it & found it moderately enjoyable. I know he wrote a ton of music for it as the previews brought changes galore

SakeDad- I was maybe a sophomore in High School, and just getting into musicals, cut me a little slack...
Best12- Ok, so it wasn't Tony Bennett, but yea, I'd pay big $$ to see him in drag...just for the humor factor alone

Posted: 10/26/06 at 10:58amI have the vinyl LP of SUGAR and find it to be third rate Jule Styne, and I LOVE most of Jule Styne's music. It is just so boring to listen to. What a strange assignment you have been given but good luck to you.

Sorry you feel that way Gypsy, I find it to always be an enjoyable listen, from start to finish. Granted the score isn't one of his best, the lyrics, however, are very clever, especially "The Beauty that Drives Men Mad" and "We Could Be Close."

Posted: 10/26/06 at 1:24pmI know the recent tour of SOME LIKE IT HOT used a hand full of numbers not included on the original cast recording. The show has had numerous rewrites, starting with the first tour in the 70s. Styne also wrote some new material for a London production in the early 1990s. I think its a fun, though not very memorable score.
