"Sunday"

Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:38pmOk, I was watching Broadway, the American Musical, and I noticed something. I am not familiar with Sunday in the Park with George (I know, tragic, I'm sorry, I'm terrible) but I was wondering if Jonathan Larson "sampled" on of the songs for Tick, Tick Boom?? How much of it is the same? Thanks!

Posted: 1/6/05 at 7:16pmThere was no sampling, but "Sunday" from ttB is VERY inspired and reminiscent of "Sunday" from SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. The melodies are very, very similar. The situation is, too: George is arranging the Parisians in the park to compose his famous painting, while Jonathan is watching the myriad of customers in his cafe, "on an island in two rivers....on an ordinary Sunday!"

Structurally, and rhytmically, the songs are identical. You could sing the lyrics to the Tic, Tic, Boom song to the music from the Sunday in the Park song, and vice versa.
One section IS actually identical, note wise - the "buns, buns, buns" (or, "bum bum bum" in the original) through the line "ON AN ORDINARY...". I believe Larson got permission from Sondheim to "quote" just a small section - it amounts to about 12 measures.

What a great song. And how awesome was it to see Jonathan Larson singing it on the DVD? I was very excited to see that in the bonus features.
