His name is Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Also "A New Brain" is almost entirely sung through.

Posted: 9/19/04 at 8:23pmI should correct myself: any current musicals on Broadway, not ones that have already closed.

Posted: 9/19/04 at 8:24pmThis is an infertile period on Broadway, so no, there are no other sung-through musicals on right now. Not since Caroline, or Change closed.

Posted: 9/19/04 at 8:38pmBare: A Pop Opera is entirely sung through, hence the "Opera."

I forgot about Rent. Yup, that's right.
The question was about Broadway, so I don't think Bare counts.

Was Assassins sung through? I know there were some lines, like the ones on the CD, but were there many lines cut from there?
Basically, what I'm asking how complete is the Assassins CD? When I phrase it that way, its OT lol

Posted: 9/19/04 at 11:20pmJust a question .. I've heard the term "operetta" being thrown around a lot in regards to shows like Les Mis and Phantom. I was just wondering if this was the correct term. Any ideas?

"This is an infertile period on Broadway so there are no other sung-through musicals on right now."
Whether a show is sung-through or not is hardly an indication of "infertility," lack of creativity of anything else for that matter. A show's musical style depends on the needs of the story being told, period. And just because a show may be entirely sung does not automatically render it operatic in the least, certainly not in any developmental sense. In fact, most sung-through musicals written today are overly inflated in their musical treatment since they have little reason to sing at all, let alone be subjected to a so-called "operatic" setting. CAROLINE, OR CHANGE is only the most recent example of such egregious misfires.

Les Mis was but I think RENT and POTO are the only ones out on broadway now
#16re: Sung Through Musicals
Posted: 9/19/04 at 11:33pmthey're not operas or operttas. They're musicals. You can call them rock operas, pop operas or sung through musicals.

but many musicals are making their way onto the opera stages, and may in the future be considered operas or operettas...
Look at "A Little Night Music" and "Sweeney Todd"

Am I crazy? Isn't there spoken dialogue in POTO? At least the auctioneer speech in the prologue. And I'm sure the Phantom yells some stuff that is not set to music.
I mean, I only saw the show once, ten years ago, so I'm not an expert like some of you...
As far as RENT is concerned, doesn't Mark have several narration monologues?
#19re: Sung Through Musicals
Posted: 9/20/04 at 12:15amYes, there is some spoken dialogue in POTO, as well as RENT, BARE, and so on. I don't think there is really a complete sung through musical.........I might be wrong.

Woops. I didn't mean to imply that at all, MusicMan. :) I just meant that we've just had a bunch of shows sacrificed to the Labor Day blues and we haven't gotten to the fall openings yet, so we're in a down period. So there aren't a lot of musicals or shows on in general, let alone sung-through ones, which are comparatively rare creatures.
And I wouldn't call Caroline, or Change an egregious misfire, but that's for another thread.
