CHICAGO: A MUSICAL VAUDEVILLE, presented in 1975, had tons of dialogue, written by the late Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. It also had Honest-to-God scenery and costumes - in colors! And it actually looked like the 1920's.
CHICAGO: THE CHEAP ASS CONCERT VERSION presented in 1997, had less dialogue, thanks to hatchet man David Thompson.

"I dont think RENT counts, theres a lot of speaking."
The only time where I think there is plenty of speaking is at the funeral, before the reprise of I'll Cover You. But then again, I think that's about the same as the dialogue before the Wigmaker Sequence in Sweeney Todd.

CATS (cringe) is also completely musicalized. (not necessarily sung, but danced, chanted, purred, meowed, and scratched) all the way thru
isnt candide an opera or sung through musical or something?
joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat
song and dance i think also
of course, none of these are on broadway anymore
and i think sweeney todd is worldy known as an operetta.
for it to be an opera has a lot to with the music style also. sweeney todd is very very classical. jesus christ superstar has a lot of rock music, but it fits the defenition of a ROCK opera (with certain songs being the most modern versions of arias, choruses, etc)
and while a lot of important meaning is delivered thru song in phantom, it is NOT sung through. if it were, all i ask of you and music of the night wouldnt be so redundant but would actually say something. so...i guess the best way to know is listen to your cast recordings, and if you can accurately decipher the whole meaning of the show and see it before your eyes and there arent any loose strings, then it's completely sung through. if it has chunks of info missing, or there are mostly songs that are repetitions of choruses and lines rather than conveying new info with each verse, then they're most likely musical comedies or whatever.

Bad Karma719 basically settled the argument.
Rent: Musical.. some dialogue
Phantom: Operetta.. all sung but not high-end serious singing like an opera.
La Traviatta.. opera. real singers. People with Kristen Chenoweth couldn't handle it.

The current CHICAGO came out in 1996, not 97.

Posted: 9/20/04 at 3:59pmWell, POTO, Rent, Cats, Les Miz... those were all NEARLY sung-through. There was a monologue or two, or a shout, sprinkled in there, but still. You guys don't have to be that specific. The majority was sung-through... like 95% or something.

im almost entirely sure that phantom isn't totally sung..as in there is actual dialogue or scenes between songs...but mebbe not - it's been a while
i really think that rent falls under the genre of rock opera tho (its very new, so it may not count as a genre at all) like jesus christ superstar, tommy, avantasia stuff, etc. then again, mebbe its a bit too pop. but i wouldnt put it in the same category as say, aida, which has tons of cool songs, but the story is mostly transmitted thru actual scenes and dialogue.
then again i dunno.
