LuPone was miscast as Norma. Close may not have the best voice for the role, but she truly understands Norma Desmond and does beautiful work with "As If We Never Said Goodbye" and "With One Look." It's a mediocre show made from one of the best films out there hearing a good actress turn it into something enjoyable is always nice. I have heard many people say that Buckley gave the performance of her career in this show though.

I saw Diahann Carroll in Toronto and she was very effective on stage. Acted the heck out of the role and sang it very well. I'm not sure how she would come accross in a recording. Rex Smith was excellent in the leading male role. It was a duplicate of the Broadway show with all the lifting sets etc.
Being about 17 at the time i saw Sunset Boulevard, All I knew was that it was based on an old movie, and the sets were supposed to be amazing! The house set floated down and the audience applauded, but by the end, it was all about Betty Buckley! Truly, I felt I got to witness an amazing performance given by her!
