I recently heard from a very reliable source that Mr. Sondheim has decided to make Johanna's role in the new film a non-singing one. If this is true, what are your thoughts?
Certainly makes it easier to cast.

Fine with me, I always hated her songs.

$100 says they make her a mute and cast Bryce Howard.
Brilliant, Ciaron!

She's a Shymalan girl, not a Burton one. It'd have to be Christina Ricci or Wynona Ryder. They've both done blonde for Burton before.
If we're sticking to proper ages here, they're both too old.
I'm back to Alison Lohman.

Wow. I am almost speechless. "Kiss Me," the one with the Beadle and the Judge, is one of my favorite songs from the show. The four-part harmony is some of the most beautiful music Sondheim has ever written.

Ooooh! I kind of like that idea, Rath. I think making her a non-singing is horrible, but I do like Alison Lohman.
I DID intimate something like this would happen. So that drops what 3 or 4 songs?

Disappointed. I know soprano singing isn't too popular with the current masses, but this IS an operatic musical for crying out loud.
And though I can begrudgingly lose "Green Finch", losing "Kiss Me" is a crime. It captures so much.
whose the "very reliable source?"
I cant believe any of you are believing this.
Just because she doesn't sing in the song, doesn't mean that they are taking out the songs all together. They could be just taking out her part.

Remember, the film probably isn't as concerned at making this film do justice to its stage material. It is focused on seeing how many Johnny Depp fans they can drag in by dropping the opera and cutting back on the "boring songs" so the kids can enjoy.
This wouldn't exactly be new news - even that early draft script I read from a couple of years ago cut most (though not all) of Johanna's singing.
And Bryce Dallas Howard sings very well for whatever it's worth.
Isn't Lohman older than Ricci?

Wow, you're right! Ricci was born in '80 and Lohman in '79. I never would've guessed!
Wow. I guess Ricci's been around so long, I assumed she was older, not thinking.
Lohman does look pretty young.
Eck.
I heard somewhere that the screenplay didn't contain Johanna's songs, so that could make sense. It's a total shame though.
