i agree that the "doing it for love" DOES romanticize it too much. she IS incredibly selfish; true love would be showing compassion for the beggar woman and telling Sweeney the truth.

SWEENEY TODD is a revenge tragedy mired on obsession from all the major characters:
Sweeney for revenge
Mrs Lovett for Sweeney
The Judge for Lucy and Johanna
Anthony for Johanna
They all dance around Johanna, but the manipulator is Mrs Lovett.
Dorian has a portrait in his attic?
I never knew that!
It maybe 28 years later, but you have to figure there are some new-comers to the theater world on here (some kids, some just discovering it) - why ruin one of the greatest plots we have for them by accident?
I've always viewed Mrs. Lovett as the driving force behind everything in the show. To me, the proof that she IS evil and the manipulator comes in By the Sea. Her line: "Now and then you can do a guest in" shows a DEFINITE bloodlust - possibly as she views it in Sweeney, but certainly as she sees it in herself.
I've often wondered if Lucy had been left coherent if Mrs. Lovett wouldn't have dealt with her on her own anyway...
