Ah... makes more sense. Fascinating to read bestowing locks of hair on friends, family members, and lovers was common practice in the 19th century, and locks of hair from many renowned writers accompany the NYPL’s vast collections of manuscripts, notebooks, and letters.

Wow. Another Sweeney lyric I had always made a dumb assumption about. Always thought Toby meant "that chap with hair so long it could be a girl's," and Shelly happened to fit the rhyme scheme...

If you're on a PC, right click on the image to get the address. On my work PC, the option is "Copy image URL"; at home, I click "Properties" and then copy and paste it. Then post it in the "Optional Image (URL)" slot. You can click "Preview" to make sure it showed up.

This is still somewhat of a practice today. I know some mothers who keep a lock of their baby's hair.
