Without knowing the talent pool, when I hear of a high school doing extremely difficult shows like Sweeney Todd, I automatically think that the show is being mounted for the director and their ego rather than for the kids or the community.
The situation reeks of artistic frustration.
A teacher friend of mine rethough the old warhorse Camelot and told the story through Mordred eyes and POV--made him the onstage narrator instead of an Act II device. He sang Follow Me with Nimue for instance. She was satisfied artistically and the kids did a show that they we able to do well and 'got'.

Why are people freaking out over this?
Who cares? So kids will be exposed to a brilliant masterpiece. Who's being harmed here??
I saw a HS production of Sweeney Todd once (a long time ago) and though it was not perfect, I'll NEVER forget the Mrs. Lovett. She was astounding.
It was quite impressive.
