Well, you clearly must've been under a rock when Bridget Jones rocked everyone. She was a strong comedic presence in mediocre films, first really being recognized in "Jerry McGuire," for which many critics admit she was robbed of an Oscar nod. But certainly her career sky-rocketed and her name was DEFINITELY known by any movie-goer after her performance in Bridget Jones. It was a HUGE comedic success, bolstered by tons of press for her huge and daring weight gain for the role. No one gets a nod for a comedic performance by the Academy if they're not already or have not become a household name.
I live under a rock in Iowa and I had heard of Renee wll before Chicago...as had everyone else.
Glad to see Tom Wilkinson's name here...he's one of my favorites and I think often underappreciated.
Unforutnately Stokes would never get cast in the film. If the show ever comes back to Broadway he is the ONLY, I repeat ONLY person I would want to see do it.
People, I never said I hadn't heard of her. I said she wasn't a household name — a lot of other people hadn't heard of her.
Oscar, I'm going to have to disagree with you again. My mother knew who she was and believe me, if SHE knows your name than you've made it because most days she can't remember mine.
I love the idea of Kline, but im not so sure abou the merryl streep talk. im not sure if she has the comic nature to her that lovett needs. Maybe Tracey Ullman? Its a stretch, i know. but i see her working well in it. who knows?
Matt_G, you're point is well taken.
and your dog is absolutely adorable.

Theaterboy - I know Streep's better known for her dramatic work, but she's definitely got comic chops - check out "Death Becomes Her" or even her great turn in another Lansbury classic, "The Manchurian Candidate." I think the beauty of Mrs. Lovett, especially Lansbury's groundbreaking work in the role, is that the character is not solely a comic foil to Sweeney's murderous plot; there's a lot of dramatic meat to the role as well. Even for those who thought her work was not as "original" as Lansbury's in "Manchurian," you've gotta admit, she puts up a strong fight against a legendary character actress. I think she's proven in that remake that she has the guts and talent to take a crack at this role.

Concerning Streep - as ridiculous as it was, She-Devil showed she had no boundaries, and is able to 'let out the stops', so to speak.
And Streep was Alan Parker's first choice for EVITA, was she not?
Matt_G , you've made a father very proud. LOL. You can't tell it from the picture, but he's a Cocker Spaniel. That pic was taken not long after he had his first — and only — "professional" haircut. Thanks for the comment.
Oh, I could tell what he was. He's such a cutie pie. I want to squeeze his little face until his eyes pop out of his head. (But in a good way)
He's got the sweetest personality. He's a big baby and afraid of his own shadow. LOL. Unfortunately, he's not a Broadway musical fan because of all the high-pitch singing. LOL!
Sweeney - Anthony Hopkins
Mrs. Lovett - Judi Dench
Johanna - Laura Bell Bundy
Anthony - Euan McGreggor
Judi Dench... what a great idea...I've always dreamed of seeing Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth (or Victoria, take your pick) as Mrs. Lovett...that is afterall the same role she plays everytime
I'd definitely be surprised if Patrick Wilson didn't wind up in the film somewhere. He does that.
if he's still performing, why not just get Edmund Lyndeck for Judge? audiences will know him as the grandpa with the massive erection from Road Trip
or maybe Simon Callow?
anyone suggest any Pirellis?

B-Matt - well, if they didn't need another film star, I think Marc Kudisch would be fabulous.
grant, can he sing that high?

B-Matt - good point, and I don't know.
John Cullum for Sweeney.
I love John Cullum, but he's a bit too old for that role. Maybe the judge, perhaps.
Interesting side bar: Cullum turned down Hal Prince's offer to replace Len Cariou in the original Broadway production. Cullum said he came to regret his decision.
