Christine Baranski!
hmm...ten years ago Anthony Rapp would have made a great Anthony or Tobie, he's just a few years to late.
Keep in mind Johanna's coloring, Emmy Rossum is not blond and even w a wig does not have the innocent colorign that a Johanna should have/
Lansbury as Beggar Woman is not a good idea.
Think about it.
I agree that Meryl Streep would be great. The woman can do anything.

Johanna - Kristin Chen.
Sweeney-Hugh J.
Lovett - Toni Colette
Anthony - Patrick Wilson
Toby - Elijah Wood
I know some of these are a bit of stretch, but boy would it be fun.
Hugh Jackman? Cheno? Have you seen Sweeney Todd?
Oooh, I can see it now; Cheno teaching the green finches and linnet birds how to become popular.
If Cheno played Johanna I'd audition for the role of the bird that The Beadle kills.

Yep...Just my thoughts on casting. :)

Chenoweth isn't the worst choice for Johanna. At least she can sing it. And she has the right hair color, too.

Bernadette Peters as Mrs. Lovett!!!!
She could sing it, true, but (despite her height), she's getting a little long in the tooth to be playing Johanna.
Although, she doesn't really seem to age, does she?
I don't know, something about her in Sweeney Todd doesn't feel right.
And when Kristin was first mentioned in this thread, I thought it was for Mrs. Lovett.
Needless, to say, I was a bit taken aback.

I really like her solo album, so I've got a soft spot for the girl. She is too old, though, now that you mention it.

Tracy Ullman is Mrs. Lovett.
Kevin Klein is Sweeny.
Lovett
La Streep (Diva. I need not say anything else.)
Emma Thompson (Just watch her as Professor Trelawny. You'll get it)
Toni Collette (This woman needs a movie musical. She can sing and she's kooky.)
Has anyone considered Nia Vardalos?

I'm using the well-known method of "If you repeat it enough, maybe it will beome true."
A bump just for fun. Look how far off this has strayed.
Can you believe not one mention of Helena Bonham Carter in this thread?
Yes, if only because this thread was about the Sam Mendes directed Sweeney.
Bonham Carter's name definitely popped up in the Burton casting threads.
There definitely were worse ideas, at least.
Actually, I just remembered this one because Rath mentioned that she wouldn't be surprised if Charlotte Church were cast -- and frighteningly enough, someone thought that would be a good idea.
Oh yeah, no question there are far worse ideas out there.
I'm still cringing at the thought of the Julia Roberts idea I read somewhere.
