Sweeney Todd question#1

Which soundtrack is the best to buy?
-Original Cast (Angela Landsbury 1979)
-Revival Cast (Patti Lupone 2005)
-Motion Picture soundtrack (Johnny Depp 2007)
PS- Sorry if this has been posted before, but the search isn't working for me...
re: Sweeney Todd question#2
Posted: 5/1/08 at 9:16pmThere are other CAST RECORDINGS, such as the symphonic Hearn/Lupone one.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

get the remastered complete Original Recording with Angela Lansbury. Not only is it the best (Lansbury is worth the price of the discs alone), it's also the most complete!

re: Sweeney Todd question#5
Posted: 5/1/08 at 9:23pmAs much as I love Ms. Lupone I didn't care for the 05 cd.

Revival recording isn't bad, it's different. If you love the original I would recommend it, but if you can only get one recording go with the original.
The original is superior in almost all respects. (musically, orchestrally, vocally, performances, completeness, etc.)

Also, there is only one soundtrack on your list. The other 2 are 'cast recordings'. BIG DIFFERENCE!

Posted: 5/1/08 at 9:27pmI agree with zooxanthellae. I have said on these boards before, and I will say it again: The remastered OBC is one of the greatest CD's that I own, of any genre, PERIOD.
re: Sweeney Todd question#9
Posted: 5/1/08 at 9:31pmDEFINATELY the New York Philharmonic with Patti LuPone and George Hearn... Hands down.
re: Sweeney Todd question#11
Posted: 5/1/08 at 9:38pmexcellent choice! You will not be disappointed!
re: Sweeney Todd question#13
Posted: 5/1/08 at 11:19pmI have all of them, but the New York Philharmonic one is my favorite.

amazon doesn't cell the CD for that, new, you have buy from a private vendor in the "market." I know there are other sites that carry it.
If you want to get teh NYP one, just get the DVD!
re: Sweeney Todd question#15
Posted: 5/1/08 at 11:47pmDefinitely Lansbury over Lupone.
re: Sweeney Todd question#16
Posted: 5/1/08 at 11:54pmNew York Philharmonic. Without a doubt.

I like different songs on different albums, but if you have to just get one, the best is the OBCR. It's the most complete and has the best performances overall.
With the exception of NPH and Audra McDonald, I can't stand the Philharmonic.

The DVD is with the San Francisco Philharmonic and Victoria Clark plays the Beggar Woman (Audra MacDonald in the NYC performances), as well as Lisa Vroman singing the role of Johanna (Heidi Clark Murphy in NYC). Minor differences, but they're not quite the same.
The private 'vendor' on the Amazon market is still the NY Philharmonic (I did order from them).
Personally, I have the 1981 Tour DVD, the 2001 SF DVD, the OBC remaster, the 2005 revival and the NYPO - and I have everything set to random rotation... so there's always a good mix to compare different singing choices to. :)

Also, the San Francisco DVD has the excellent Timothy Nolen (a splendid Sweeney himself) as Judge Turpin, as opposed to the pretty terrible guy on the NY Philharmonic CD.

I'm not at all a fan of the movie cast. They are great actors, but HBC is not a singer and I cannot stand to hear her butcher 'The Worst Pies in London'.
I LOVE the Hearn/Lupone cast.
But really you can't go wrong with the OBC (AMAZING!!) or the 2005 revival. Get all three!

D2 and Melaz, just my sentiments, LANSBURY by far!
And, might you have something green leftover, I would love to own the Depp one. If only because I love everything he's done so far, not because of the quality singing
